HKDA Global Design Awards

HKDA Global Design Awards Unlock your design excellence with the Global Design Awards (GDA), the pinnacle recognition platform uniting designers worldwide with global markets.

Established in 1972, the Hong Kong Designers Association (HKDA) is the first of its kind in Hong Kong for practicing designers and design administrators, with aims to encourage the use of quality design and uplift the appreciation of quality design in the community. HKDA Awards was the most established multi-disciplinary design competitions in Asia-Pacific which organized by HKDA since 1975. From

1980 onwards, it became a biennial event. HKDA Awards was not simply a design competition to honour design excellence. HKDA Awards used design competition as an engine to energize a series of event (seminars, awards presentation ceremony, exhibitions etc) as a yearlong campaign which aims to promote Hong Kong Design to the world and enhance Hong Kong’s image as one of the major creative hub in Asia-Pacific. After playing one of the important roles in the design scene of Asia-Pacific for 36 years, HKDA Awards had started accepting entry submissions outside of Asia-Pacific in 2011 and became a global event. It was appropriately renamed to HKDA Global Design Awards (GDA). In HKDA GDA2011, 14 world-class judges have been invited to be the jury panel, attracting thousands of entry pieces from 40 destinations around the world including Mainland China, USA,Great Britain, France, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, Australia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong and so forth. In 2013, we look forward to make HKDA GDA2013 open an important
page in the desing history.

· 加強報名前後的溝通與提醒,讓流程更清晰;
· 探討日後作品領回安排;
· 研究更多存倉支援的可能性;
· 與不同單位合作,尋找延續作品價值的可能性。

希望透過此聲明釐清誤會,並繼續得到大家的理解與支持。

敬請垂注。

To our valued design community:

Public Statement from the Global Design Awards

The Association has taken note of the recent discussions and concerns raised by various sectors of society regarding this year’s Global Design Awards. We acknowledge the many voices expressing views on the retrieval and storage of submitted works, and we fully understand the public’s regard for these creations. We deeply regret any unease or distress caused by the current circumstances.

As clearly stated in the registration terms, all submitted entries are non-returnable unless participants request their return by the specified deadline. Participants were required to agree to all terms and conditions in order to complete the registration process. This arrangement is consistent with the regulations of many international design competitions and is intended to ensure the smooth ex*****on of both exhibition and judging procedures.

The Organizing Committee did notify all participants prior to the deadline regarding the option to retrieve their works. However, some designers did not respond within the specified timeframe, making it impossible to proceed with further arrangements. Subsequent proposals for repurchasing works through payment were carefully considered, but due to fairness concerns for all participants, such arrangements were deemed impractical. We also made efforts to collaborate with The Salvation Army to locate and recover works, but these attempts were ultimately unsuccessful.

Given the large volume and varying sizes of submissions, coupled with the limited storage capacity in Hong Kong, the Association is unable to bear the costs required for long-term storage. We regret that we are unable to preserve all works indefinitely. In the interest of fairness, all entries will be handled in a consistent manner, with no selective retention of any items.

We have heard your feedback and will implement the following improvements moving forward:

- Strengthen communication and reminders before and after registration to ensure greater clarity in the process
- Explore more accessible arrangements for post-exhibition retrieval of works
- Investigate additional support options for temporary storage
- Collaborate with external partners to explore ways to extend the value and visibility of submitted works

We hope this statement helps clarify the situation and that we may continue to receive your understanding and support.

Thank you for your attention.

【Description】In Shenzhen, the Cinesky Cinema in Nanshan stands out for its unique design, providing audiences with an immersive movie-watching experience. This project was initially constrained by a very low budget, which inspired the designers to focus on the creative use of light as a central design element. By relying on projection lights to cast shadows and create dynamic interactions, the design not only minimizes costs but also achieves a highly engaging and playful aesthetic.
To fully grasp construction costs, the designers strived to create a space that is both cohesive and distinctive. The design inspiration came from memories of the first collaboratively designed cinema, combining grid projection design with the three-dimensional metal strip design from previous projects, showcasing the integration of architecture and the cinematic world while revealing the connection between the two cinemas. This allows audiences to feel the design resonance that transcends time and space the moment they step into the cinema.

【Description】In spring 2024, we are invited to design a maze at Wan Chai harbour front area of Hong Kong, five artists are being invited in total. We have to interpret the definition of maze and may use any kind of materials to create the work. The location is facing the beautiful Victoria Harbour and site area given is 10m x 15m. The concept of mirror maze comes from children’s kaleidoscope, through multiple reflections, we have different spatial experiences; most of mazes are organised by pathways, mirror maze uses collective rooms to create non-directional explorations. Through the reflections of Hong Kong, mirror maze not only providing delightful body experiences, but also new perspectives to view the city.

【Description】Human beings get the nourishment to continue their lives from the fertile soil of the fields, and the designers used ‘Thousands of miles of fertile field’ as the design concept to create the landscape of the square. Regarding the fertile fields, the landscape design mainly embodies the concept of extracting the plots and colors of the fields into grids as seen from a bird’s eye view. The intersecting lines between each field are utilized in the square installation, recreation area and so on. The overall shape reflects the endlessness of the fertile field, but at the same time, there are outdoor recreation areas, flower ponds, performance areas, children’s playground and other functional areas, just as people get nourishment for the land, visitors can have various activities in this place.

【Description】It’s timeless, as bricks can be used to create beautiful yet durable spaces. Haikou is situated on Hainan Island, wrapped by the ocean like a warm blanket in fall. We wanted to create this cinema related to the geography of the city without the ocean blue color. We decided to use bricks as design theme because they are sustainable and formed with sand which cover the tracks of the ocean, creating the wave scene in the space, like a movie of make-believe. We used an artistic approach on how to make bricks in same size form the shape of waves through skillful stacking, and form the ceiling, bar counter, seats and other functional areas.

【Description】This design explores the concept of "misalignment" to create unique spatial experiences, challenging traditional architecture. In Sichuan's mountainous terrain, streets adapt to slopes with flexible, tiered layouts. The project reimagines this "three-dimensional alleyway" by disrupting stable spatial structures, fostering unexpected interactions between people through nested volumes and dynamic pathways.
Planned with irregular geometries, asymmetrical forms, and shifting scales, the design encourages new spatial combinations. Floating architectural boxes break conventional boundaries, enhancing visual connections and gradually increasing privacy across levels. Inspired by Sichuan’s layered alleys, the space becomes a cultural and social hub.

【Description】The piece, ‘Through The Tears, To Touch You’ has three key aspects that combine traditional arts and craftsmanship with cutting edge technologies.
It is situated on the Old Pier in Yim Tin Tsai, in the Sai Kung bay in Hong Kong. It was here that earlier generations departed, emptying the village by the 1970’s. The first aspect is the custom Bamboo Moongate; the second aspect is an original poem written in augmented-reality calligraphy using the A-R-t; the third aspect is the Performance.
This is accompanied by original music overlaid by recollections of the Old Pier narrated by the villagers themselves.
