A nagy homoktenger
"A gebli még öt napig dühöngött! Amióta Egyiptomban meteorológiai intézet működik, még sohasem jegyeztek fel kilenc napos déli szelet.A sivatagjáró beduinok sem emlékeztek ilyen természetű tüneményre.
Tán hajdanában, 2500 évvel ezelőtt, ugyanilyen, szűnni nem akaró hőhullám okozta Kambyzes perzsa király hadseregének vesztét, amikor Dalla felől kiindulva, Sziva-oázis, a híres Jupiter-Ammon orákulum székhelyének elfoglalására indultak. A legenda szerint a perzsák magukkal vitték a Nílus-völgyében zsákmányolt templomkincseket, de az istenek forró homokvihart támasztottak, amely elfödte az idegen hódítókat. Egyetlen emberük sem menekült a Nagy Homoktengerből, egyikük sem érte el Szivát és hírmondójuk sem tért vissza a Nílus-völgybe."

A big sand sea
"The gebli raged on for five more days! Since the establishment of the meteorological institute in Egypt, a nine-day southern wind had never been recorded before. Even the desert-traveling Bedouins could not recall such a phenomenon.
Perhaps, 2,500 years ago, a similarly relentless heatwave caused the downfall of King Cambyses' Persian army when they set out from Dalla to conquer the Siwa Oasis, the famous seat of the oracle of Jupiter-Ammon. According to legend, the Persians carried with them the temple treasures looted from the Nile Valley, but the gods stirred up a hot sandstorm that buried the foreign invaders. Not a single one of them escaped the Great Sand Sea, none reached Siwa, and no messenger returned to the Nile Valley."
