Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, one of the greatest tennis players of all time and a sporting icon, is set to retire.
It is difficult to imagine tennis without the American legend, who has won all there is to win during her 27-year career.
From a purely sporting point of view, Williams will be remembered as one of the game's greatest competitors, an athlete who possessed the purest serve in the women's game and a never-fading desire to win.
She will also be remembered for speaking out against racism, pushing for gender parity and equal prize money, and about her experiences of the healthcare system as a black woman.

The Grand Depart of the eight-day event, the UK's biggest professional cycle race, will take place in the city centre on Sunday, 3 September, organisers said.
Race director Mick Bennett said Manchester, which hosted the final stage of the race in 2019, was "synonymous with British Cycling".
Great Britain Cycling Team opened a training wind tunnel in the city in October and this year the council also completed work on the £1.55m Wythenshawe Cycle Hub.

Morocco's Ines Laklalech has become the first golfer from North Africa to qualify for the LPGA tour, having been inspired by the coach behind her country's World Cup run in Qatar.
Laklalech, 25, earned a spot on the premier tour in women's golf despite shooting her worst round on the final day of the qualifying event in the United States.
The Casablanca resident fired a one-over par 73 in the final round at Highland Oaks in Dothan, Alabama on Sunday.
Yet she finished on 19 under par at the end of the eight-round tournament and shared 12th place - good enough to claim a much sought-after spot on next season's tour.
"I'm a big fan of the Moroccan national team so I'm super, super happy," Laklalech said. "It definitely gave me an extra boost on the course."
The Atlas Lions have become the first African side to reach the semi-finals of football's World Cup, and Laklalech has been using the positive attitude of Morocco coach Walid Regragui, when speaking about his squad, while out on the course.

The 24-year-old from Norfolk achieved the sole victory this year for Mercedes in the penultimate race at Sao Paulo.
Russell finished fourth in the drivers' standings, two places and 35 points above team-mate Lewis Hamilton.
"They haven't forgotten how to build a fast race car," said Russell. "We just got it wrong this year."
He told BBC Radio Norfolk: "We got the philosophy wrong. We went down a route which turned out to be the wrong route.
"Sometimes it takes you a long time to dig yourself out of that hole. Now I feel we've dug ourselves out of that hole and we're building on top of that.

Billionaire Mat Ishbia is closing in on a deal for the Phoenix Suns and Mercury in an agreement that will value the franchises at $4bn (£3.3bn).
Mortgage executive Ishbia has made a deal in principle with Robert Sarver, who is selling after being suspended for racist and sexist behaviour.
"Both teams have an incredibly dynamic fanbase. I have loved experiencing the energy of the Valley," said Ishbia.
The deal would be a record for the purchase of an NBA team.

The next World Cup will be played across three nations - Canada, the United States and Mexico.
And it will be an expanded competition, with 16 additional teams taking part, meaning more matches.
However, the tournament will still be played out within five weeks from mid-June 2026.
Questions will be asked about the amount of travel players and fans will have to make, with the tournament being held in 11 US cities, along with three venues in Mexico and two in Canada.
Sustainability will, therefore, be an important issue with the considerable number of flights needed to transport teams, fans, media and Fifa officials across three countries.

France kicked off their 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign in Qatar against Australia on 22 November 2022. In the match, Mbappé was involved in three of France's four goals in a 4–1 victory; he was in the build-up for the second goal, scored the third – a header from an Ousmane Dembélé cross, and assisted Olivier Giroud for the fourth goal. Four days later, Mbappé scored both of France's goals in a 2–1 victory over Denmark, securing qualification to the knockout stages and thus breaking the "World Cup Champions' Curse.”
In the knockout round of sixteen against Poland, Mbappé scored two goals, the first into the roof of the net from 16 yards and the second a curling strike into the top corner, in a 3–1 win for France. After appearances in France’s wins against England and Morocco in the quarter and semi-finals, Mbappé became only the second player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final, scoring three goals against Argentina, two of which were penalties.
After a 3–3 draw after extra time, the match went to a penalty shoot-out; Mbappé scored his penalty, but France lost the shoot-out. He secured the tournament's Golden Boot with eight goals and became the sixth all-time top goalscorer in World Cup history with twelve goals, tied with Pelé. Mbappé also became the outright top goalscorer in World Cup finals, with four goals, and his hat-trick was the first in a final since Geoff Hurst for England in 1966.

With Lionel Andreas Messi, Argentina advanced into the championship match against France, with Messi stating that it would be his final World Cup appearance. On 18 December, Messi made his record 26th World Cup finals appearance and won the World Cup with Argentina following a 4–2 victory over France at Lusail Stadium in a penalty shoot-out after a 3–3 draw in extra-time ending Argentina's 36-year-long wait for the trophy.
Messi scored two goals and also converted his penalty in the shoot-out. With seven goals in seven games, Messi became the first player to score in each round of a World Cup since the last-16 round was introduced in 1986, and he received the Golden Ball for player of the tournament, becoming the first player to win it twice. He ended second in the Golden Boot race to Mbappé.

Athletes starting out in the business world are in a unique position when it comes to branding for footballers. Financial health can be useful, but ultimately, it’s the platform and established audience that a player has access to that can be used to help create such brands.
Memorable football moments are often the product of trophy winning goals, underdogs defying the odds, and even the tactical approaches of managers. They’re ‘big’ moments that make a statement to the footballing world.

Branding is no longer simply a case of adorning a product or a service with a logo. Branding is integrated strategic thinking that defines what a product or service stands for, why it exists and what it will do for its consumers. A well-crafted brand is built from inside out, with the strategy being manifested externally.
UEFA GROW offers national associations five different services under its brand pillar, aimed at catering to their various needs.
• Organisational purpose – defining what the association stands for, its mission and its vision
• Team, competition and initiative positioning – defining the brand essence, proposition, values and personality
• Team, competition and initiative architecture – defining how the various brands fit together and how they can support each other
• Marketing strategy – integrating the brand in the association’s overall marketing strategy and defining concrete brand activation plans
• Visual identity development – creating a new look and feel for the association’s brand portfolio

The brand is an iceberg. This is a useful analogy as only a small proportion of an iceberg is visible above. While we understand that often your main focus remains on the game itself, there is no doubt that your football team and club is a brand within its own right, a brand that your fans, sponsors and club members feel an affinity with. That’s why branding is so important, regardless of the stature of your football club or team, to generate a positive rapport not only between team members but a much wider audience that invests time and money into your team.
Let’s talk about why it’s so important for your football club to take on the form of a brand and the benefits that doing so can have. Identity, Loyalty, Value, The Club, and the Culture.
