Nobody ever objects to the thing theyā€™re actually worried about.

ā€œI canā€™t afford itā€ is usually ā€œIā€™ve spent money on business things before and it didnā€™t work and I feel a bit stupid about it.ā€

ā€œI donā€™t have timeā€ is usually ā€œIā€™m already drowning and I canā€™t face one more thing Iā€™ll feel guilty about not doing.ā€

ā€œIā€™m too newā€ is usually ā€œIā€™m not sure Iā€™m allowed to take myself seriously yet.ā€

I know because Iā€™ve said all three. Out loud, to someone trying to help me.

So Iā€™ve answered them honestly in the carousel, no sales call required, because Iā€™d rather be real with you and show you the maths than tell you to ā€œinvest in yourselfā€ or ā€œyou can earn 100K in just ten minutes a dayā€ šŸ™„

Before I told the world about my hacking woes, I did think - maybe this isnā€™t something I should share because people might think less of me, and then I remembered my business is built around being real and not hiding the hard parts so I went ahead.
And then my DMs filled up with my business friends checking in. My real-life friends were brilliant too, donā€™t get me wrong ā€” they held me together emotionally. And my husband/live in tech support fully saved the day. But the support I got from my business friends was different (and needed!) because they understood what was actually at stake. What it means when your accounts are your livelihood. What the knock-on effects are. Nobody needed it explained.

Thatā€™s the thing about self-employment nobody warns you about. Itā€™s not the hard days. Itā€™s the hard days with nobody around who understands the specifics.

And huge shout out to (go follow her) who gave me a voice note pep talk in the way only she could. She told me to stop being quiet about what I do, because people will go and spend their money with someone who doesnā€™t care half as much and probably doesnā€™t deliver either. She reminded me, what I remind my clients of all the time, that itā€™s my duty to let the people who I can help know about whatā€™s on offer because otherwise maybe they donā€™t get the help they need and leave the industry, the exact thing Iā€™m trying to stop.

So here I am, doing what Iā€™m told.
Your Birth Biz Besties exists, not just for the strategy (although thats great too!) but so you have those people in your corner when the wheels come off (as they inevitably do).

I genuinely worried about this bit when I was building it.

Because birthwork can be territorial sometimes. Same town, same families, overlapping services ā€” and I've watched people in the past get quite cagey with each other over it. I assumed I'd have to actively manage that. Set ground rules. Referee a bit.

I've never once had to.

What actually happens is doulas supporting other doulas, lactation consultants helping doulas with breastfeeding support and baby massage instructors giving tips toothers who want to train. Somebody posts a win and everyone bigs them up. Somebody posts a disaster and everyone shows up for that too.

A rising tide lifts all boats isn't a slogan in there. It's just what people do.

I don't fully know why it worked out that way. Maybe because you can't do this work without being decent, and decent people find each other. Maybe because there's enough families needing support that the scarcity was always imaginary. Or maybe its because I attract people who just understand.

I built this mixed on purpose.

A lot of memberships niche down hard ā€” all doulas, all lactation consultants. I went the other way, and itā€™s one of the decisions Iā€™m really glad I made.

Because some of the most interesting conversations Iā€™ve seen all year have been between baby massage instructors and new doulas, or IBCLCs with OTs. And the networking - phenomenal.

You donā€™t get those conversations when you stick to just your own modalities. You get the from being in a room of variety, but one where everyone is supporting pregnant or postnatal families in one way or another.

Yep. All of this by 11am this morning.

I wasnā€™t even dressed when the school called because I was still trying to sort everything out šŸ™ˆ

But this is the reality of working for yourself and being completely solo while also being the main caregiver.

I've tweaked the sales page about fifty times. šŸ™ˆ

I've re-recorded a bunch of reels because I said "you know" too much. I've re-written this caption taking out these confessions more than once. And this morning I honestly feel a bit like I did the morning of my very first antenatal class ā€” equal parts I really hope they like it and ... I know exactly how much they can get from this if they just let themselves believe it's possible.

Which is a strange way to feel about something I've been running for over a year.

But here's the thing about opening doors. Every single time, you're asking people to trust you with something. Their money, yes. But mostly their hope that this time it might actually work.

I don't take that lightly. I never have.
