Is Your Website in Hiding?
SEO – Search Engine Optimisation – is the art of optimising your website so that it will be found when people do an online search for the products or services you sell. When someone enters a word or phrase (keywords) on Google, a search is made of all existing websites to try to find those that may be most relevant or provide the answers the user is looking for. Google then lists links to websites in order of how relevant it believes they are.
Why is SEO so important?
Let’s face it, very few of us search beyond the options presented on page 1 of a Google search, so being on that first page is really important. And being in positions 1 to 3 are critical. If your website doesn’t appear here, how can you hope to drive new potential customers to your website?
Organic or Pay Per View?
You could pay for advertising – e.g. Google ads, Facebook ads etc. and these can be very effective. However, all indications are that Google ads work better when your website is SEO’d. Also, many users (particularly in Ireland) are more likely to click on organic search results than ads!
Web Design v Web Content
Most businesses today put significant resources into developing well designed, gorgeous websites – for most, it’s their shop front to the world, so they must look great! Having completed a fabulous design, many business owners then choose to write their own content, mainly because they know their products and services better than anyone. But do they have the skills required to write that content so that it’s appealing both to readers (potential new customers) and Google simultaneously? Remember – you can have the best, most gorgeous website in the world but it will be of no benefit to your business unless people see it!
Can SMEs compete against multinational competitors?
Larger companies put significant resources into optimising their websites for Google searches, so can SMEs compete? Yes, of course! And they are – every day! No-one is saying it’s easy – it takes time, effort and some patience, but when your website moves from page 10 to page 1 in Google searches, it will be so worth it!!
