Folks,

It's that time of year again, where the sun shines, and the flowers yield nectar and the bees decide "lets move house!"

This old chestnut of a picture gets dusted off for another year and I ask you to share it far and wide to help get the message out.

I have just a gut feeling for this following point, don't quote me on it scientifically, and we don't count the actual bees...

But, I've a really strong feeling this year, at some point, we will pass 100 million bees saved (not swarms, bees).

This absolutely doesn't work without you, the eagle eyed public, and the ever helpful beekeepers, who just keep signing up!

If you see a swarm of bees, do not panic, do not approach it, do not disturb them.

Just take a picture and email it (along with your eircode and contact number) to [email protected]

Once we get it, we will find you a beekeeper :)

Some Facts:-

1) Honey Bees' Wings Stroke

The honeybee's wings stroke 11,400 times per minute, which creates their characteristic buzzing sound

2) Queens Lay Eggs

As the Queen Bee is the only female bee in the hive with a fully developed reproductive system, her primary job is laying eggs. On average, they lay up to 1,500 eggs per day.

3) Female Worker Bees

From guarding the hive to making the honey the colony relies on female worker bees to thrive

4) Male Worker Bees

Male bees (drones) have only one job: mate with a queen outside the hive

5) Nectar is for Energy

Nectar is high in natural sugars, which gives bees the energy to do their jobs.

6) A Single Worker Bee Production

One bee will make only a 1/2 teaspoon of honey in its entire life.

Bees get all of their food and nutrients from flowers
