For 24 years, I believed my son Asaf was locked in silence. I loved him fiercely, cared for him with all my heart, and did everything I could to give him the best life possible. But deep inside, I carried a quiet griefโthe painful belief that I would never truly know him.
I didnโt presume competence. Not because I didnโt love or believe in him, but because I simply didnโt know it was possible. I was told he had the cognitive abilities of a young child. I accepted that truth, never imagining that he had an entire world of thoughts, emotions, and experiences inside him.
And then, everything changed.
I discovered that Asaf understands everything. He has deep thoughts, a sharp sense of humor, and a heart filled with love for his family and friends. He just never had the means to express itโuntil he started typing. With one sentence, my entire world shifted. I realized he had spent years listening, thinking, and feeling, while I spoke to him in simple phrases, believing that was all he could grasp.
This journey has been humbling, emotional, and life-changing. Itโs why I created my lecturesโ"Love Without Words," about raising a non-verbal child with autism, and "A Voice from the Silence," about discovering his ability to communicate and the world it opened for both of us. Through these talks, I hope to challenge perceptions and help others see non-verbal individuals differentlyโnot as people who "don't understand," but as individuals whose voices simply need a different way to be heard.
