That’s correct—pores don’t actually “open and close” in the way we often think. Pores are tiny openings in the skin that allow sweat and oil to escape. The misconception comes from how the skin reacts to various factors.

When people say pores are “open,” they often refer to them becoming more visible, such as when they are clogged with oil or dirt, or when they expand due to heat or high humidity. Conversely, pores can appear smaller when the skin is cool, or after using certain skin-care products like toners or astringents, which can tighten the skin temporarily.

But in reality, pores don’t have muscles to open and close; their size is influenced by factors like genetics, age, skin type, and how much oil the skin produces.
