India has slipped six places to rank 157th out of 180 countries in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF). The report highlights growing legal pressures on journalists, judicial harassment and the increasing use of national security laws, while warning that global press freedom has fallen to its lowest level in the index's 25-year history.

Academic and public intellectual Apoorvanand has sharply criticised the state of public institutions in India, alleging that elections, competitive examinations and even the economy are “rigged”.

In a post on X, Apoorvanand claimed that despite repeated controversies around institutions and examinations such as NEET and CBSE, society continues to accept the situation passively.

“Elections are rigged, NEET is rigged, CBSE board examination is rigged, the economy is rigged,” he wrote, before adding that society has accepted all this as destiny because “its mind has been rigged”.

His remarks come amid ongoing political debates around examination irregularities and institutional accountability.
