This is a pamphlet under the slogan Art Against Violence. Nobody has a copyright on the content. Any individual/group is as entitled to print/post and circulate the pamphlet as we are.
About: Art Against Violence is a collective banner of concerned individuals and groups, united in their defense of progressive humanistic ideals and against any form of violence and hatred. It was conceived following the anguish surrounding the dastardly Peshawar attack on schoolchildren by the Taliban. It held a sit-in in Jantar Mantar in Delhi on the 19th of December 2014. The hashtags and along with the online Facebook event ‘Selfie Against Hate’ are initiatives jointly undertaken along with other concerned individuals to counter the message of hatred being circulated through the glorification of Nathuram Godse.
Why Gandhi, not Godse
When our country was fighting the battle against the injustices of the oppressive British regime, there were ample differences of opinions regarding the methods being deployed to fight and the vision for a free India. On one hand there was Gandhi’s non-violence, on the other the path of armed revolution employed by Bhagat Singh. There was also a Subhash Bose, who wanted to free the country with the help of countries like Germany and Japan. Despite these differences and sharp ideological conflicts however, there wasn’t any sense of animosity between these political strands. Bhagat Singh respected Gandhi who had, despite considering Bhagat Singh and his associates as young men fallen astray, paid homage to him on his martyrdom. Despite his disagreements with the methods of Subhash Chandra Bose, Nehru had defended the officers of the Azad Hind Fauj in the historic court case at the Red Fort. The murder of Gandhi by Godse on the 30th of January 1948 was an exception. It wasn’t merely a killing of one man by another; it was the murder of an idea by another. It was a brazen attack upon the very idea of acceptance and religious tolerance by fundamentalism. It was the killing of an unarmed old man outside a prayer meeting by a self-proclaimed representative of the very same religion; a murder whose aftermath saw sweets being distributed and the act being celebrated and justified by the same sect of self-styled protectors of faith. It is surely not an ordinary event that a man who has never been known to have thrown so much as a stone at any British official during the freedom struggle, is being hailed as a hero today for the single act of murdering Gandhi; more so, since those who celebrate him are linked to organizations which now have a hold over the center of power in this country.
The constitution that we embraced post-independence had a place for every religion, but no place for any extremism in the name of religion. Even then there were such forces which wanted the laws of Manusmriti as the constitution of India, which opposed affirmative action like reservation, and which were trying hard to spread religious extremism and communal hatred; albeit being marginalized both ideologically and electorally. The scenario has changed in the last seven decades. Such forces are in power today and have a sizeable influence on our society. They’ll naturally use the influence to celebrate their heroes which have been considered outright villains up until now. The question is whether the nation is ready to accept as heroes, those who chose not any representative of the colonial regime but someone who stood for pacifism and civil non-cooperation, and was the symbol of the freedom movement, as the target of their murderous hate. The question is- where shall the country reach if it follows such a path? We can at the least get an idea by looking at recent events. The most glaring instance is the killing of one of the prominent crusaders against superstition, Narendra Dabholkar in Maharashtra last year. These are times when one hears of attacks on young men and women in parks on one hand, and the news of a book being burnt or crackers being burst on the death of an author like U.R. Anatamurthi on the other. This is clearly an ideology which believes in violence and murder to silence its opponents rather than engage with them through healthy debates/discussions. Science and History are mere tools to force parochial beliefs down everybody’s throat. This is an ideology which forces the country backwards instead of driving it forward, by making life far more difficult for the peasants, the laborers and the students on one hand and making it far easier for the wealthy corporates on the other. This is an ideology that promotes riots and thrives on the politics of communal polarization and naked majoritarianism. This is in fact an ideology that fully endorses terror; an ideology that abuses Gandhi and dedicates temples to a convicted murderer like Godse.
Therefore, by saying a ‘yes’ to Gandhi and a ‘no’ to Godse, we affirm our commitment to tolerance and reject violence and hatred. In any case, can there ever be a comparison between a man respected the world over, even by his ideological opponents and the murderer Godse? Our primary concern here is linked with a desire, to not only maintain harmony between the extraordinarily diverse faiths and communities and see a pro-people model of growth and development, but to also see scientific temper and knowledge thrive in a society where people of different beliefs can express themselves without any fear whatsoever. Art Against Violence is a democratic platform convened with the aim of preserving and strengthening the core constitutional values of democracy, freedom and tolerance in our country. The initiative to compare and contrast Gandhi with Godse is a step in that very direction.
We appeal to the people of India to recognize the real face of forces which are trying to project an intolerant, cruel and barbaric murderer like Godse as a hero and reject them, so that we can give our next generation a peaceful and prosperous future.
