Partial ACL Tear or Complete ACL Tear? What’s the Difference?

Not every ACL injury is the same.

The ACL has two main bundles—AM and PL. When one bundle is affected, it may be considered a partial ACL tear, while injury involving both bundles can indicate a complete ACL tear.

Symptoms may also differ. Partial tears may cause less knee instability and fewer “giving way” episodes, while complete tears can make walking, running, and other activities more difficult.

Clinical examination and MRI help assess knee instability and determine which ACL bundles are affected.
