An ad that won so many hearts & went on to become one of the bests ads on Indian television, was created in just a single take?

The iconic Cadbury’s ad that was created by Piyush Pandey & brought to life by Mahesh Mathai not only created history but is an example of brilliant direction & storytelling by master craftsman Mahesh Mathai. He shares the behind the scene moments during the shoot & his views on the remake of the ad 25 years later.

It was 1983, and 22-year-old was directing his first film with cricket legend Nawab Pataudi for Chancellor Ci******es. The scene was simple - a waiter brings ci******es on a silver tray, Pataudi turns and picks one up with royal elegance. But take after take, something kept going wrong. The timing was off, the cue was missed, and expensive film was rolling.
Everyone in India knew Pataudi had a glass eye, but here’s what nobody knew, not even cricket experts who watched him play for decades - which eye it actually was. You couldn’t tell by looking at him, and even today, forty years later, cricket experts still argue about which one it was.

But Mahesh knows, because in that moment, a legend trusted a young filmmaker with his secret, teaching him the most important lesson of his career - always look beyond what everyone thinks they know.
