A former University of Kentucky student has pleaded guilty in the death of her newborn son after concealing her pregnancy.

Laken Snelling, 22, admitted in court that she deprived the baby of oxygen. She told the judge she was under significant emotional stress and that the pregnancy was unexpected.

The baby was born at full term in August 2025. Prosecutors said a medical examiner determined he was born alive and died from asphyxia.

Laken is expected to receive 13 years in prison, pending final sentencing and parole proceedings.

The case has left many asking difficult questions about what happened and what might have prevented the tragedy.

Kentucky also has a Safe Haven law allowing parents to safely relinquish an unharmed newborn at designated locations, including staffed hospitals and fire stations.
