Rekha was a talented baker, known for her delicious cakes and pastries. What started as a passion had turned into a small business, with friends and neighbors constantly placing orders. She loved baking but lately, she felt overwhelmed. She barely had time to spend with her kids or even enjoy the desserts she created.
One evening, her daughter asked her, “Mom, can we bake cookies together like we used to?”
Rekha hesitated. She had three pending orders. “Maybe tomorrow,” she replied but the disappointment in her daughter’s eyes lingered.
That night, Rekha sat down and reflected. She had always said yes to every order, believing that making others happy meant she was successful. She was creating an impact in people’s lives but at what cost? Her own joy was slowly slipping away.
The next day, she made a decision. She set clear limits on the number of orders she would take each week. She blocked out time for herself and her family. Saying “no” felt strange at first but to her surprise, her customers respected her boundaries. And her family was thrilled to have her back.
With time, Rekha found joy in baking again not just for others but for herself.
Reflection by Swapna Menon
Many of us believe that making a difference in others’ lives is the greatest success. We say yes to everything projects, responsibilities, favors because we want to be needed, valued and appreciated. But in the process, we often forget the most important person: ourselves.
Rekha was creating happiness for others while feeling exhausted inside. But true impact begins within. The way we respect our own time, the way we nurture our own joy that sets the foundation for the impact we create in the world.
Saying “no” is not rejection; it’s redirection. It’s choosing where your energy truly belongs. It’s making space for what truly matters.
Ask Yourself:
1. Is there something you’ve been saying “yes” to that you need to reconsider?
2. How can setting boundaries bring more balance to your life?
