Almost every designer has faced this.

You spend hours working on a design.

You think you finally nailed it.

You send it to the client with that little feeling of:

“Yes. This is it.”

Then comes the reply:

“Can we make a few changes?”

Okay. Fair enough.

You change the colour.

“Can we try something else?”

You change the font.

“Can you make it more premium?”

You try another layout.

“Can we see one more option?”

And suddenly...

Revision #1 becomes Revision #7.

Then Revision #7 becomes:

“Actually, can we go back to the first concept?” 💀

[Likely] When I was starting out, I used to think the biggest problem was:

“Why do clients need so many corrections?”

But after working on hundreds of designs and dealing with different kinds of clients, I started looking at it differently.

The real question isn't how many corrections the client is asking for.

It's:

“What exactly does the client want?”

Because sometimes the client says:

“Make it pop.”

But what does pop actually mean?

More colour?

More contrast?

More visual hierarchy?

More attention?

Or maybe they simply feel that the design isn't communicating the message strongly enough.

Then they say:

“Make it premium.”

But premium according to whom?

A luxury brand?

A minimal brand?

A sophisticated brand?

A high-end audience?

[Certain] The more vague the feedback, the more guessing the designer has to do.

And that's where I think experience changes a designer.

Earlier, I used to ask:

“What should I change?”

Now I ask:

“What exactly isn't working for you?”

“What do you want the customer to feel when they see this?”

“Is there any reference that's closer to what you're imagining?”

“What do you like or dislike about the current version?”

Because once you understand what the client is actually trying to achieve, the design conversation becomes much easier.

[Likely] Years of designing don't just teach you how to make better designs.

They teach you how to:

Understand people.
Understand businesses.
Understand expectations.
Ask better questions.

And honestly...

Sometimes the best design skill isn't designing.

It's knowing what to ask before you start designing.
