Of all the weapons humanity has ever created, none—absolutely none—even come close to rivaling the "Tsar Bomba." The sheer danger posed by this weapon can be gauged by the fact that it terrified even the very scientists who built it. It was a 50-megaton bomb—or, to put it in simpler terms, approximately 3,300 times more powerful than "Little Boy," the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945. Its destructive force was so immense that it could obliterate any major city in the blink of an eye, leaving absolutely no trace behind.
When the Soviet Union (modern-day Russia) tested this weapon on October 30, 1961, the mushroom cloud rising from the blast reached an altitude of 64 kilometers—nearly seven times the height of Mount Everest. The shockwave generated by this explosion was so powerful that it circumnavigated the entire globe three times over. Windows in homes as far as 900 kilometers away from the test site shattered, and the brilliance of its flash was so intense that it could be seen from a distance of 1,000 kilometers. Anyone standing within a 100-kilometer radius would have suffered severe burns from its scorching heat.
Delivering this massive, 27-ton bomb was no easy feat, either. To fit it inside the "Tu-95" bomber aircraft, the plane's bomb bay doors actually had to be removed. To give the pilot dropping the bomb a fighting chance at survival, an 800-kilogram parachute was attached to the weapon; this slowed the bomb's descent, allowing the aircraft sufficient time to escape to a safe distance. The shockwave from the blast pushed the massive plane 1,000 feet into the air, but thanks to luck and skill, the pilot managed to control the plane and save his life.
Imagine what would happen if this bomb were dropped on a country today. If this 50-megaton bomb were detonated in the center of any major city or country in the world today, the devastation would be unimaginable. Immediately after the blast, everything within a radius of approximately 10 kilometers, whether it be large iron and concrete buildings or humans, would be vaporized in the blink of an eye. Only a large fireball and a deep crater would remain. A wave of heat and fire would spread approximately 60 kilometers from the center of the blast, causing instant third-degree burns to everyone present and melting vehicles.
Buildings thousands of kilometers away would be shattered, and this single blast would instantly kill millions of people. Furthermore, the radioactive ash (Nuclear Fallout) that would fall from the sky would poison and render the entire area's environment, water, and land barren for generations.
