"Threads: The New Text-Based Platform by Meta, Taking Social Networking by Storm!"
Recently, many people have been trying out new social networking platforms as alternatives to Twitter. Some popular options include Mastodon, Spill, and T2. Now, Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has launched its own text-based platform called Threads.
Threads are similar to Twitter but are connected to your Instagram account. To create a Threads account, you simply log in using your Instagram details.
Unlike Twitter, Threads currently doesn't have paid subscriptions or ads. However, your verification status from Instagram carries over. You can use your existing Instagram connections to find and follow people on Threads.
Threads is a new app, so it doesn't have features like long videos, direct messages, or live audio rooms yet.
To use Threads, you can download the app on your iOS or Android device in many countries. However, it's not available in the European Union due to privacy concerns. When you log in with your Instagram account, you automatically follow the same people as on Instagram, and your username, name, and settings are imported.
Threads quickly garnered more than 10 million signups shortly after its launch, and within a single day, the number of signups surged to an impressive 30 million.
When utilizing Threads, you are granted the liberty to compose posts with a maximum length of 500 characters. Furthermore, you have the ability to enrich your posts by incorporating images, videos, and GIFs. Each post is capable of accommodating up to 10 media items. You have the ability to see Thread posts and profiles on the platform, you can't log in or make posts through the web interface.
To delete your Threads account, you need to deactivate it. However, If you want to delete your Threads account, you will need to delete your Instagram account as well, according to Meta's privacy policy. The company is looking into allowing separate deletion of Threads accounts based on user feedback.
Threads don't have a timeline that only shows posts from accounts you follow. The home timeline is a mix of posts from both accounts you follow and other accounts. The algorithm ranks posts and includes recommendations from accounts you don't follow, which is important for a new app with fewer user connections.
You can't send direct messages within Threads. The intention is to let users send threads to other apps instead of creating a separate messaging inbox.
Threads don't currently support decentralized social networking like the fediverse. Meta has future plans to integrate ActivityPub support, the technology used by platforms such as Mastodon.
Some features that are missing from Threads include a feed showing posts only from accounts you follow, GIF support, full web support, post-editing, translation, user-generated image descriptions, hashtags, and the ability to see your own liked posts.
Since Threads is linked to your Instagram account, it's considered part of your Instagram data. Concerns about data collection have been raised by users based on privacy labels in the App Store.
