How easy it is to overlook the tiniest of everyday problems. Ones so universal that almost everyone on the planet can relate. But, we’re not talking about a lack of resources, health crisis, or an emotional turmoil. We’re here to discuss something far less dramatic, but statistically far more insane: lost socks.
Psychologist Dr. Simon Moore and statistician Dr. Geoff Ellis collaborated and created a formula to determine the likelihood of socks going missing in the wash. The study aimed to help this common household frustration by analyzing both psychological and statistical causes. Probability = (L(p×f)+C(t×s))-(PA×A). Where: L = laundry size, p = number of people in the household, f = frequency of washes per week, C = complexity of the load, t = number of, different types of items in the wash, s = number of socks in the wash, PA = positive attitude (rated on scale of 1 - 5), A = attention to laundry detail (scale of 1 - 5) Men are more likely to be careless in their laundry habits, with 26% admitting to making a mistake while doing laundry. People lose an average of 1.3 socks per wash cycle. This adds up to 15 socks lost per person per year. Over a lifetime, this equates to around 1,264 lost socks. This results in an estimated cost of £2,528 per person over a lifetime. This adds up to £2 billion per year in lost socks for UK households. In India, this could be a trillion-dollar opportunity!
