Google Photos' Unlimited Free Backup Ends On May 31st.

Yes, you heard it right. Google updating their Photos’ storage policy to build for the future.

Once this change does take effect on June 1, 2021, over 80 percent of you should still be able to store roughly three more years worth of memories with your free 15 GB of storage. As your storage nears 15 GB, Google will notify you in the app and follow up by email.

Google Photos has a new “personalized estimate” for how long it could take to max out storage that takes into account backup frequency. Next year, another utility inside Photos will highlight dark or blurry photos and large videos that you might want to delete to conserve space.

If you have a Pixel 1-5, photos uploaded from that device won’t be impacted. Photos and videos uploaded in High quality from that device will continue to be exempt from this change, even after June 1, 2021.

Search A/B testing full desktop .

Since appearing last month, testing on this desktop web dark theme for Google Search continues. More and more users have briefly encountered it over the past few weeks, while we experienced it for a prolonged period last night on Chrome for Windows that spanned several queries and did not disappear after one search.

This darker look notably extends to the iconic Google.com homepage (as seen below). There are one or two visual bugs with the night-friendly appearance involving missing lines and shadows. Overall, it’s similar to the mobile counterpart and works as expected.

There's a piece of good news here, there's a switch (after the search bar) to turn it on or off during the test phase.

This test of a dark mode for Google Search on the web is not widely rolled out, with only a handful of users encountering it. The screenshots here are from Windows 10 in Chrome.

Google Maps can now overlay how COVID-19 cases are trending before you visit!

Since the start of this year, Google has added a number of useful resources about how to get around amid a pandemic. A new Google Maps layer now works to show COVID-19 case trends “in an area so you can make more informed decisions.”

Once live, Google Maps will prompt users about how they can “See COVID-19 info” by tapping the layers icon. Under “Map details” is a new overlay with a red warning icon.

Tapping will show “seven-day average of new COVID cases per 100,000 people for the area of the map you’re looking at.” The view is themed differently with color coding to “easily distinguish the density of new cases” and separate each geographic section. Google has also notes whether cases are trending up/down.

Trending case data is visible at the country level for all 220 countries and territories that Google Maps supports, along with state or province, county, and city-level data where available.

These sources get data from public health organizations like the World Health Organization, government health ministries, along with state and local health agencies and hospitals.

The Google Maps COVID-19 layer is rolling out worldwide on Android and iOS this week.
