FROM AN 8×10-FT ROOM IN MUMBAI SLUM TO NASA: THE EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY OF JAYKUMAR VAIDYA

His school once withheld his results because his family couldn’t afford the fees. Today, Jaykumar Vaidya works at NASA.

Growing up in a small 8×10-ft room in Mumbai’s Kurla slum, Jaykumar witnessed poverty up close. His mother worked odd jobs to support the family. He repaired TVs for ₹4,000 a month and taught students to help fund his education.

But financial hardship never stopped him from dreaming big.

He went on to study Electrical Engineering, win 3 national and 4 state-level robotics awards, and work as a researcher at TIFR.

His research journey later took him to the University of Virginia and eventually to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

Today, Jaykumar works on scientific instruments that help researchers study Mars, the Moon and Earth’s upper atmosphere. 🌎🚀

Consumers would rather pay a small fee for certain UPI transactions to ensure efficiency and reliability than insisting on a free service, NITI Aayog vice chairman Ashok Lahiri has said, advocating for the popular instant payment system to be self-sufficient.

While Lahiri didn’t lay out the timeline or structure for introducing the merchant discount rate, his remarks came after the government recently amended the law, removing the blanket zero-MDR mandate on UPI transactions to allow nominal charges on select high-value digital transactions.

Speaking to Moneycontrol on the sidelines of Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai on September 10, he urged fintech companies to work on a sustainable financial model, adding that these firms have the ability to transform banking.

Five youths were killed after the vehicle they were travelling in collided head-on with a truck in Assam's Sonitpur district on Saturday.

The accident occurred near a petrol pump in the Mith Chapori area of Balipara on National Highway 15.

“The accident occurred near a petrol pump in the Balipara area under the Rangapara Police Station limits when the car collided head-on with the commercial vehicle,” a senior police officer said.

The deceased have been identified as Har Gobinda Hajuwari, Nayan Swargiary, Papu Bora, Pranjal Bania and Sanjay Mech, all residents of Ghoramari Batabari.

A senior police officer said an investigation into the accident has been initiated.

“Five people died in the accident. All the deceased were occupants of the car,” the officer said.

According to preliminary information, the victims were travelling in a microvan vehicle when a truck coming from the opposite direction rammed into the vehicle. The impact caused the vehicle to veer off the road and fall into a deep ditch, killing all five occupants.

A local resident said the five youths were from the same locality and were close to one another.

“All five of them were from Ghoramari Batabari and were always together. They were killed on the spot. Three of them were married, while two were unmarried. All of them were below 40 years of age,” the resident said.

The impact of the collision was severe, with the bodies having to be pulled out of the badly damaged vehicle, the resident added.

Police reached the scene soon after the accident and launched an investigation. Further details are awaited.

There is good news for cricketers and trainees in Guwahati and Assam. Assam has one of the largest indoor cricket facilities in the country.

The institute is located at the Assam Cricket Association Cricket Academy in North Guwahati. BCCI Secretary Devjit Shaikia inaugurated the indoor cricket facility on Friday.

Describing it as one of the largest indoor institutes in the country, the BCCI Secretary said its extensive infrastructure will enable the cricketers of Assam to train throughout the year in any weather or adverse weather conditions.

The 17,000 square foot indoor training facility was inaugurated at the ACA Cricket Academy in Phulung, Kamrup district. There are four practice pitches for spin bowling and five practice pitches for fast bowling.

In a landmark judgment, the Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court at Rangia sentenced six persons to life imprisonment in connection with the 1995 witch-hunting murder of an elderly woman in Kamrup district.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Mukul Chetia convicted six accused - Soneswar Boro, Jangal Boro, Suraj Boro, Kandora Boro, Hareshwar Boro, and Dhanla Boro - and sentenced each of them to life imprisonment. The court also awarded five years of rigorous imprisonment under additional charges and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on each convict. In default of payment of the fine, they will have to undergo one month of simple imprisonment

The case dates back to 1995, when an elderly village healer, Maria Boro, then about 80 years old, was accused of practicing witchcraft after a youth reportedly died during treatment.

Acting on suspicion, a group of villagers from Bodangeri Kuchi under Baihata Chariali police station in Kamrup district allegedly assaulted Maria Boro at her residence, beat her to death with sticks, poured kerosene over her body and set it on fire. Her body was later buried behind his house.
