Celebrating Yash Chopra on His 93rd Birth Anniversary! 🎥❤️

I owe my journey into the world of cinema to Yash Chopra—my inspiration, and the unparalleled maestro of Bollywood romance, who would have turned 93 today. I was lucky to have shared many special moments with him. He was the Chief Guest at the launch of my book ‘The Great Indian Dream’, he gave the Mahurat Shot of my directorial venture, ‘Rok Sako To Rok Lo’, and I traveled with him to Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata as a part of the FICCI team lead by him, lobbying to corporatise the film industry. He would tell me ‘when you speak I feel Shah Rukh is speaking’ — a complement I hold very dear to my heart. Though he couldn’t be personally present, he accepted our Power Brands Hall of Fame induction through a video message. But despite all the interactions and memories, I somehow feel luckiest that just weeks before his passing, I could write a timely tribute of mine for him (carried by about 24 newspapers & 15 magazines)— my humble attempt to capture the magic of a filmmaker who turned love, longing, and melody into an art form that skipped hearts and defined generations.

As I wrote in the article, “To me, he is a great psychologist and an intellectual more than anything else; and perhaps more than the so-called intellectual art film-makers too. To understand the pains of the era of the license raj and workers' exploitation to the era of liberalised romanticism— and deliver in both those times commercially successful, timeless, classic hits is exemplary. His biggest miracle was perhaps at the age of 65, when he directed Dil Toh Pagal Hai. It really had all the beatings, whistling, feelings and cravings of a pagal dil. After I watched the film, my only wonder was how he could get right the feelings and too young to know about a longings of an 18-year old kid's heart? Exceptional. To me, Dil Toh Pagal Hai was his most diflicult creation. His son Aditya Chopra had just given DDLJ and that was too big a benchmark to live up to. Yet, Yash Chopra did.”

He didn’t just make movies; he created dreams that resonated across cultures, inspiring filmmakers and romantics alike—including me.

His legacy lives on — in my memories, and the hearts of millions.
