"Hermès sales rose 9 per cent in the second quarter, ... as wealthy shoppers continued to shell out for its high-end bags. ... ... Hermès, the group behind Kelly and Birkin bags, is one of the industry’s most resilient performers due to its ultra-wealthy customer base and carefully controlled supply of its most in-demand handbags — which start at around €10,000 — resulting in demand that outstrips supply."

: I look at such news (Yahoo Finance via Reuters, see below) and statements soberly and with considerable skepticism.

On the one hand, this is an objective stock market situation and statistics. On the other hand, I know the client.

The thing is that the consumer is not a rational person. He is ripe for consuming luxury for aesthetic, perfectionist reasons, and a host of other factors that he cannot explain. He has not had to consume luxury as something unnecessary and superfluous up until now, so why on earth would he use it less in the future?

I see it this way: the fluctuations in the stocks of luxury fashion houses are more related to where exactly they will sell their things.

Of course, the lion's share of buyers, in quantity, who make the statistics and huge part of turnover, are clients who leave x,### euros. If they get tired of the markups, they will switch to . But the thing is, they are there anyway. They just switch between seasonal sales and outlets all year round.

Those clients whose well-being is directly affected by the stock market, and whose fortune fluctuates with any news, spend x - a low xx% of their income on all their daily expenses, incl. . Their frugality and cautious restraint are a myth. A check for shopping from xx,### euros is an everyday occurrence, not therapy, no longer self-affirmation, but a given, a habit, a way of life, like a favorite milk or type of cheese, nothing special, not an event. They are in all year round, they can be gambling during seasonal sales, they can also take an extra couple of suitcases in outlets.

Here, there is still huge room for maneuver for any client.

For brands, as it seems to me, the following is important now: the legendary should try to experiment and not be boring, but also not completely dilute the brand (well said, how to do it? )). Those who have chosen to be legendary and recognizably stable, realize that they are (in the best sense of the word) boring, and that a significant part of their sales will move to outlets (their collections are recognizable and not very different). Young and emerging brands should be patient and focus on unprecedentedly high quality. Quality, cut, feeling, mood, talent in every line (we can't simplify it just to the image they built) -- these are the outposts of luxury, almost inaccessible to the premium segment and absolutely -- to the mass one. It will take years to deserve what is now inherent in big brands, but it is worth it!

In addition to distributing customers through familiar sales channels, I think clientele will optimize their spending by visiting the original source, the birthplace of luxury -- France and Italy -- where the assortment, authenticity, price, and for many -- tax-free as well -- will be combined with the enjoyment of culture, sun, sea, beauty in the broadest sense of the word
