TV ads for smartphones, cars, grocery stores - that’s where we expect to see companies having a dig at their competitors.

But with the growing trend of “deinfluencing”, social media managers of up-and-coming eCommerce brands are finding creative ways to gain a competitive edge. “Deinfluencing” posts center around throwing shade at certain trendy, often expensive, products. Posts tagged with have gained over 100 million views on TikTok. Often, these posts do influence people in the traditional way, recommending a cheaper alternative to the trendy product.

Deinfluencing: is it a shady tactic or an amazing strategy?

ChatGPT’s now infamous inaccuracies may have got people double-checking their sources, but marketers are still giving it the time of day.

According to a survey by Marketing Brew, 48% of marketers are using ChatGPT, while only 25% said they’re not - the rest were unsure.

Are you using ChatGPT for marketing?

Clickbait might skyrocket impressions, but it deteriorates trust.

Enter the antidote: zero-click content - content that gives users value without needing to click to watch a video or read a blog post (i.e. this).

The Most Common Start-Up Marketing Mistakes Founders Make

1. Making too many assumptions about their audience
The long-term goal is a specific, defined view of your target market, but don’t make assumptions about them that aren’t backed up by experience or evidence. You’ll end up missing out on people that would’ve been your customer.

2. Discounting the start-up edge
We see so many start-ups trying to “act big” when authenticity would actually build loyalty better.

3. Relying on ads
Ads might be a great way to get customers in the door, but without marketing activities more focused on brand and loyalty building - like thought leadership, content marketing partnerships, and organic socials

Have you ever been guilty of one of these mistakes?

With the recession's pressure on budgets, it might be tempting to cut your content marketing budget by relying more heavily on AI-generated content.

Although AI can make content generation more efficient, it can also make it less effective. In recessions, the importance of brand trust and credibility skyrocket - that means content must be valuable and personalized for your target audience, to a level that AI tools can't achieve (at least right now). As AI-generated content proliferates across the internet, there's an opportunity for true thought leadership content to cut through.

If you're a Twitter user, chances are you've seen Mastodon in someone's profile. The platform's explosions of growth correlate with changes Elon Musk has made to Twitter. At first, journalists started to hop over to Mastodon's decentralized network of servers - now, over 1.5 million users have joined.

A new social platform presents a new opportunity - but businesses need to be careful about how they market on Mastodon. As a (relatively) small community, led by key voices, the mass market approach of traditional social media marketing isn't going to win fans. Instead, brands should utilize Mastodon as a platform for internal influencer marketing and thought leadership.

Company profiles have a place on LinkedIn, but don't underestimate the impact of personal branding.

Personal and company branding are merging, largely down to LinkedIn: the founder/influencer and CTO/thought leader aren't uncommon combinations on here.

Here's why building a personal brand for B2B marketing works:
1. People engage more with people, not brands. And that goes for decision-makers in businesses too.
2. The LinkedIn algorithm prioritizes personal profiles over company pages.
3. In recessions, brands need to build an increased sense of trust to maintain loyalty. An authentic, human voice is a great way to achieve this.

is awesome. Is it going to replace marketers? Probably not.
But can it transform the way we work? Definitely.

We already know ChatGPT can create summaries and write (somewhat mediocre) blog posts. But how else can marketers use it?
1. Keyword targeting suggestions - ChatGPT can get the ball rolling on keyword research. Just give it a prompt and it will ping back a bunch of ideas.

2. A/B testing ideas - Just input your original copy, then let ChatGPT come up with ways to A/B test your ad.

3. Define a tone of voice - Experiment with your branding by asking ChatGPT to write about your business in multiple different tones of voice (you can get as specific as you'd like).

4. Optimize ad copy - Get a ChatGPT API key, then give ChatGPT your ad copy and target audience. It will automatically optimize ad copy for your market and can even analyze your results.
