Japan ranks the highest amount of paid-in-advanced cellphone users world-wide! Making it 99.9% of the population!

Japanese citizens spend roughly 0.3hrs on social media everyday, compared to the US which spend 1.7hrs a day.

The top active social platforms amongst Japanese are: #1. LINE #2. Facebook #3. Twitter. The last ranking social platform is unfortunately, Google+, making it only %2 of the population.

In 2015, Instagram was used increasingly around the world. The shift to visual communication was visible also in Japan, as Instagram increased its popularity, mostly among women and young people!

However, Facebook is catching up on the trend of focusing on the visuals. Also in Japan, it is now possible to create instant articles that can be read without even leaving Facebook. Since people will decide whether to read the article or not based on the visuals, it is necessary to customize the title and thumbnail image.

Watching television dramas in Japan is very popular among young people. Along side of watching their favorite shows, an important part of the watching experience is tweeting about it in real time as well.

In October 2015, mobile messaging app LINE launched a new feature that combines shopping and social media use. The app can now be used as a rewards card to gather points at stores and restaurants.

From a user’s perspective, this sounds good as almost all stores have their own type of point card in Japan. No need to stuff the card into the already full wallet! For the stores, there are benefits as well, since now they can send messages about special offers directly to the customers!

There was a recent survey regarding the attention span of people who happen to see video advertisements when viewing media on Facebook. Among the people surveyed, 47% only view advertisements for 3 seconds before skipping to the main content; whereas 74% curiously observe the video ad for a maximum of 10 seconds before skipping to the video of hope.

Interestingly, when having the video ad muted and captions enabled, 12% of the average viewer curiously watches the advertisement longer than normal.

In Japan, Facebook is used mostly via mobile devices, especially during the summertime. According to a survey conducted by Facebook in 2015, 84 percent of posts were published via mobile devices in the summer.

When asked about their summer goals, a great number of respondents said that they would like to travel. Therefore, it is logical that they do not want to waste time sitting in front of a computer.
