Last month, a farmer shared a picture of a chick with a strange swelling on the wing. I asked one important question: “Is it soft or hard?” After touching it, he replied, “This one is strong.”
That simple check (whether the swelling is soft or hard) can save you time, money, and stress.
If it’s soft, it’s likely an abscess or a boil. You can use a clean needle or syringe to gently pop it, drain out the fluid, and apply GV (Gentian Violet) to keep it clean. That’s how you stop it from turning into a bigger problem.
But when the swelling is hard, it could be as a result of trauma or early signs of infection, and you’ll need to monitor it closely or apply mild antimicrobial cream.
However, in many cases, especially with fast-growing broilers, that hard swelling is nothing serious. It’s a buildup of tissue that sometimes forms over joints or pressure points. It’s part of their growth process, especially when they lie too long on hard surfaces or bump their wings as they grow. It doesn’t always need treatment, unless it gets bigger or affects movement.
The key is knowing what to do and when to act.
