MASHUJAA DAY SPEECH.
Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests,
Today, I stand before you to ask a question that has weighed heavily on my mind—a question that strikes at the heart of leadership and governance in our time.
Where are the wise men who once stood beside presidents and national leaders, offering counsel that shaped the future of nations? Where have they gone?
There was a time when leaders, even those wielding immense power, recognized that their strength alone was not enough to guide a nation. They understood that the burdens of leadership were too great for one mind, one voice, or one perspective to carry. So they sought out the sages—the intellectuals, the philosophers, the elders—men and women of deep wisdom and experience who could offer guidance rooted in knowledge, history, and principle.
These wise counselors did not flatter or tell the leaders what they wanted to hear. They spoke hard truths, warned against hubris, and reminded those in power of the responsibility they carried—not just to their own ambitions but to their people, to future generations, and to history itself. They were the invisible guardians of the nation’s conscience, ensuring that the path forward was just, thoughtful, and steady.
But today, as we look around, we must ask: Where are these voices now?
In this age of constant noise, where the next election cycle looms larger than the next decade, have we silenced the wisdom of those who might help our leaders navigate the stormy seas of national and global challenges? Have we replaced sage counsel with the echo chambers of self-serving advisers, with those more interested in preserving power than pursuing truth?
The wise men of old did not seek fame or fortune; their service was to the greater good, to the long-term well-being of the nation. But in a world where short-term gains and instant results seem to dominate the political landscape, have we lost sight of what true wisdom looks like?
Where are the leaders who still believe in listening to voices that challenge them, that call for restraint, and that remind them of their moral obligations? Where are the advisors who can speak truth to power without fear of retribution, who are motivated by the good of the nation and not by personal or political gain?
Perhaps, the wise men have not disappeared. Perhaps, they are still among us, but their voices have been drowned out by the clamor of populism, partisanship, and the relentless pursuit of influence. They are there, in the quiet, waiting for leaders who are brave enough to seek them out, who understand that the true strength of leadership is not found in isolation, but in collaboration with those who can see farther than the immediate horizon.
It is not enough to be intelligent or charismatic to lead a nation; one must also be humble enough to recognize that wisdom is not born in a vacuum. It is cultivated through listening, through learning, and through a willingness to be guided by principles that are larger than oneself.
My friends, as citizens, we too have a responsibility. We must demand that our leaders seek out wisdom. We must expect them to surround themselves with voices that challenge, uplift, and offer deeper insight. The future of our nations depends not only on those who hold office but on those who advise them—and ultimately, on the collective wisdom we encourage and celebrate in our societies.
The wise men may seem distant, but they are not lost. It is up to us, and to the leaders we choose, to bring them back into the fold, to honor the tradition of seeking counsel that has guided nations for centuries.
Let us remember that true wisdom is timeless, and if we are to build lasting legacies, we must listen once again to the voices that call us to a higher standard.
Thank you.
