In Japan, millions of discarded smartphones, laptops, and other electronic devices were given an extraordinary second life. Instead of letting these gadgets sit in landfills, the country launched a nationwide recycling effort to collect old electronics from homes, schools, and businesses. Inside these devices were small but valuable amounts of gold, silver, and bronze — metals that could be carefully extracted and reused.

Specialized facilities processed the collected electronics, separating and refining the precious materials hidden within circuit boards and components. Over time, enough metal was recovered to manufacture thousands of medals. The recycled resources were then used to create the official medals awarded to athletes.

The project demonstrated how technology waste can become a valuable resource when handled responsibly. By transforming discarded electronics into symbols of global achievement, Japan showed that sustainability and innovation can work together — turning yesterday’s devices into lasting pieces of history.
