They blocked me from attending the State Funeral and Burial of the late Raila Odinga, and now there are efforts to stop me from visiting Bondo to condole Mama Ida and lay flowers on Raila’s grave. I find that unnecessary and unfortunate.

Every Kenyan, regardless of political affiliation, has the right to mourn a national leader. We should not turn Raila’s passing into a political contest. Raila Odinga did not belong to Gladys Wanga or John Mbadi — he belonged to all Kenyans. His legacy is national, not regional or partisan.

Raila attended my brother’s burial, and I feel it is only humane to reciprocate the kindness and respect he showed me. In politics, we were competitors — he called me Gachieta, and I called him Kitendawili. But it was all in good spirit, never out of hate.

When death comes, it reminds us of our shared humanity. If it were me who had passed, I know Raila would have come. He was a man of great compassion and a generous heart.
