Where Serious Families Send Their Children - Cambodia's International Schools and What They Say About the City, By NFeature - Cambodia's Leading Voice of Luxury

The quality of a city's international schools is one of the most reliable indicators of the quality of the city itself for the internationally mobile family. Not because education is the only thing that matters but because the presence of serious international schools signals something specific about a place. It signals that enough families of sufficient means and sufficient expectations have chosen to be here that the institutions required to serve them have been built and sustained. It signals that the city has crossed a threshold from interesting destination to viable home. Phnom Penh has crossed that threshold. The international school landscape of the capital has developed with the particular speed that characterises the city's development in general, from a handful of small schools serving the diplomatic community of the 1990s to a genuinely competitive landscape of institutions offering the IB, the Cambridge curriculum, the American system, and the various other frameworks that the internationally educated family moves between as their career takes them from city to city.

Northbridge International School Cambodia offers the full IB continuum from the Primary Years Programme through the Middle Years Programme to the Diploma, on a campus of considerable quality with a faculty that reflects the serious investment the school has made in recruiting teachers whose experience matches the ambitions of the curriculum they deliver. The extracurricular programme, the sports, the arts, the community service and the global citizenship activities that the IB framework requires and that the best IB schools deliver with genuine commitment rather than mere compliance, is the element that the families who have been through the IB system elsewhere tend to evaluate most carefully and find most satisfying at Northbridge.

The International School of Phnom Penh brings something that newer institutions cannot manufacture, history. Decades of serving the diplomatic and expatriate community of Phnom Penh have produced an institution with deep roots in the city and a community of alumni that extends around the world. The Cambridge curriculum it delivers is among the most internationally recognised academic frameworks available, and the school's track record of university placements reflects the quality of the preparation it provides. For the family that is moving to Phnom Penh and whose children's education is the factor most likely to determine whether the move is sustainable, which is most families with school-age children, in NFeature's experience of talking to the internationally mobile community that is choosing Cambodia, the question of schools is the question that is asked first and answered last. The answer, in 2025, is better than it has ever been. Cambodia is ready for your family. The schools are ready for your children.

Siem Reap Beyond the Temples, Why Cambodia's Temple Town Has Become a Destination in Its Own Right, By NFeature - Cambodia's Leading Voice of Luxury

Every great city begins as something else before it becomes itself. Siem Reap began as a support city, the settlement that grew around the need to house and feed the visitors who were coming to Angkor Wat. For most of its modern history it has functioned in that role, a gateway rather than a destination, a place defined almost entirely by its proximity to something else rather than by what it actually is. Something has shifted. The shift is visible in the restaurants first because food is always the first thing that tells you a city has decided to take itself seriously. Embassy by Chef Kimsan has produced the most important tasting menu in Cambodia from a kitchen in Siem Reap. Mesa Restaurant carries a rating that puts it among the highest-reviewed restaurants in all of Southeast Asia. Old Maison Eatery small, perfectly formed, always fully booked produces food that the most experienced diners in the city describe as the best meal they have eaten in Cambodia. The shift is visible in the hotels. Shinta Mani Angkor designed by Bill Bensley with the architectural ambition that his best work always carries has established Siem Reap as a destination for the design-conscious traveller who would previously have considered the city only as a base for temple visits. Phum Baitang, rising above its rice paddies in stilted villas that are among the most beautiful hotel rooms in Southeast Asia, offers an experience of Cambodia so specific and so extraordinary that the temples however magnificent become one element of the stay rather than the entire reason for it. The shift is visible in the streets, in the galleries and the craft shops and the coffee houses and the bars that have appeared in the past five years in the neighbourhoods around the old market and along the river, building a cultural infrastructure that belongs to the city rather than to the tourism industry that has always surrounded it. Siem Reap is becoming itself. Go for the temples. Stay for the city. Return for both.

The Dance That Survived, Classical Khmer Dance and the Most Extraordinary Cultural Continuity in Asia - By NFeature Cambodia's Leading Voice of Luxury

In 1975 the Khmer Rouge identified Cambodia's classical dancers as enemies of the revolution and set about killing them. By 1979, when the regime fell, an estimated ninety percent of the country's traditional performing artists were dead.

What survived, survived in bodies. In the handful of dancers who lived through those years, who hid their knowledge, who performed nothing, who carried the gestures and the music and the stories of the classical tradition in their muscles and their memories through four years of a regime that would have killed them for what they knew and who, when it was over, sat down with the children who remained and began again.

The classical Khmer dance that exists today is that survival made visible. Every performance in the theatres of Phnom Penh and the cultural centres of Siem Reap and the stages of the Cambodian Living Arts is a direct continuation of a tradition that began in the courts of the Khmer Empire and that the twentieth century attempted, with considerable thoroughness, to destroy.

It did not succeed. The dance is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity recognised in 2008 for the specific qualities that make it extraordinary and for the specific fragility that makes its preservation urgent. The recognition matters. But what matters more is the performance itself, the hour or two hours of movement and music and storytelling that connects the audience to something nine centuries old and still completely alive.

Attend a performance. In Phnom Penh or in Siem Reap, where the Cambodian Living Arts organisation stages regular performances of the highest quality. Watch the hands which carry the tradition's vocabulary in a language of gesture that takes decades to learn and a lifetime to master. Listen to the pin peat, the ensemble of xylophones and gongs and wind instruments that produces the specific sound that has accompanied this dance since the Khmer Empire built its first temple.

And understand that what you are watching has survived the thing that was designed to prevent it from surviving. That survival is the most extraordinary performance of all.

What Phnom Penh Brews, The Craft B**r Scene and the Community Building It, By NFeature - Cambodia's Leading Voice of Luxury

Every city that takes its food seriously eventually takes its b**r seriously. The relationship between the two is not accidental, it reflects the same quality of attention, the same curiosity about ingredients and process and the particular way that what you drink changes what you eat and how you experience the table you are sitting at. Phnom Penh took its food seriously first. The restaurants came, the tasting menus and the w**e lists and the kitchens producing Khmer cuisine with the care it has always deserved. Then the cocktail bars. Then, with the particular inevitability of a city whose hospitality culture was developing too fast to leave any category unexamined, the craft b**r.

Kingdom Breweries is where the story begins. Founded in Phnom Penh with the explicit ambition of producing b**r that reflected the ingredients and the climate of Cambodia rather than importing the styles of countries whose brewing traditions developed in entirely different conditions, Kingdom has built a range that is as interesting for what it attempts as for what it achieves. The tropical fruit b**rs, brewed with Cambodian mangoes and passionfruit and the other fruits that the market produces in abundance and at a quality that the imported ingredients of most craft breweries cannot match are the b**rs that most clearly make the case for what Cambodian craft brewing can be. Not imitations of Belgian wheat b**rs or American IPAs, but something that starts from the same technical foundations and arrives somewhere that could only be here. The bars that serve Phnom Penh's craft b**r, the tap rooms of BKK1 and the specialist bars of the riverside district that have built their lists around local and regional craft producers are the spaces where the community of Phnom Penh's b**r culture gathers. They are not the most glamorous spaces in the city. They are among the most interesting, populated by the cross-section of Phnom Penh life that the best bars in any city always attract. People who are here for the b**r and the conversation and the specific quality of a Phnom Penh evening spent somewhere that is genuinely doing something rather than performing the idea of doing something. Order local. Stay for the conversation. This is Phnom Penh at its most itself.

What Cambodia Wears, Jewelry, Gemstones, and the Accessories That Tell the Kingdom's Story, By NFeature - Cambodia's Leading Voice of Luxury

Every culture expresses something essential about itself in what it chooses to wear. Not the clothes which are subject to climate and practicality and the particular pressures of the working day but the adornment. The jewelry. The objects that are chosen rather than required, that are placed on the body with deliberate intention, that carry meaning beyond their material value. Cambodia's relationship with jewelry and adornment is one of the oldest and most sophisticated in Southeast Asia. The apsara dancers carved into the walls of Angkor Wat wear jewelry elaborate collars and armlets and earrings and headdresses whose specific forms were not invented by the sculptors who rendered them but observed from the actual adornment of the Khmer court that the temple was built to honour. The objects in the Silver Pagoda, the gold Maitreya studded with thousands of diamonds and precious stones, the ceremonial regalia of the Cambodian monarchy represent a tradition of fine metalwork and gemstone setting that the Khmer civilisation had been refining for centuries before the first stone of Angkor Wat was laid. That tradition exists today. In the gold workshops of the riverside district, where craftsmen work in techniques that have not fundamentally changed since the Khmer Empire, producing pieces that reflect the same formal language, the same use of the naga serpent and the lotus flower and the geometric patterns of Khmer decorative art that the Angkor temple carvings display. In the gemstone market of Pailin, where the rubies and sapphires that have been mined from these hills since the time of the kings are still traded by dealers whose knowledge of the stones is the accumulated knowledge of generations of proximity to them. And in the studios of the contemporary Cambodian designers, a small but growing community of jewellers and accessories makers working in BKK1 and the riverside district who are taking the country's gemstone resources and its craft traditions and producing work that belongs in the international luxury conversation rather than in the souvenir market. The distinction matters. The tourist market and the luxury market are not the same market and are not served by the same product. What NFeature is interested in and what Cambodia is increasingly producing is the second kind. The piece that is bought because it is beautiful and specific and made with genuine skill from materials of genuine quality. The piece that, when someone asks where it came from, produces the answer that opens a conversation rather than closes one. Cambodia is producing that piece. NFeature is here to tell you where to find it.
