The silent room — why Korean engineers go quiet on global calls

The Western team thought the Korean engineers had nothing to contribute.

The Korean engineers thought they were being respectful.

This is what $3M in miscommunication looks like.

I’ve sat in this meeting dozens of times over 30 years.
Here’s exactly what’s happening — and why most training completely misses it.

In Korean professional culture, speaking before you are certain is a sign of disrespect.
You think. You confirm internally. You wait for the right moment.

In Western meeting culture, silence reads as disengagement.
Or worse — disagreement without the courage to voice it.

Neither side is wrong.
Both sides are reading the room through their own cultural lens.
And the gap between those two lenses is where deals collapse.

What I teach isn’t ‘speak more in meetings.’
That’s surface-level advice that creates awkward overcorrection.

What I teach is how to signal presence and competence in a Western meeting format — without abandoning the cultural instincts that are actually strengths.

The goal isn’t for Korean professionals to sound Western.
The goal is for their expertise to land the way it deserves to.

3 things that actually help:

1. The transition phrase that signals engagement without requiring certainty (‘Based on what I’m seeing so far...’)
2. How to use questions instead of statements to enter a discussion early
3. The one-sentence preparation habit that changes the entire dynamic before the call starts

Have you experienced this dynamic — from either side of the table?

Comment with your experience — I read every reply.

What skills should your social media manager possess?

Here is part one of four, outlining the skills every social media manager should possess.

Skill number 1 - Personality.
Skill number 2 - Curiosity.

Your social media manager should have a personality that brings people to them. Their personality should shine through in their posts to build that rapport and engage with the audience. The SMM should be curious about your company, your people, your brand and most importantly, curious about you. This curiosity will draw the audience in to your brand and your way of thinking.

Join me tomorrow with part 2.
