# # # **The Origin of the Palabaddala Trail**

The Palabaddala Trail begins in Ratnapura, known as the “City of Gems,” and was once the preferred route for Sri Lankan royalty who wished to embark on the sacred pilgrimage to Sri Pada. Unlike other trails, the Palabaddala path embodies a connection to the kingdom's ancient history, having hosted monarchs, Buddhist monks, and commoners who journeyed together along this “difficult path.” The rugged nature of the trail earned it a reputation as a test of faith and endurance, attracting those who sought a truly immersive pilgrimage experience.

# # # **The Path of Legends and Sacred Sites**

The trail is dotted with historical waypoints, each carrying its own story and significance. Some of the most notable stops include **Lihinihela**, **Geththampana**, **Dharmaraja Gala**, and **Seethagangula**. These waypoints have become a part of the pilgrimage’s spiritual landscape, each offering a unique experience and a profound connection to the myths and legends surrounding Sri Pada.

**“May Saman Deviyo bless us…”** 🙏

According to long-held Sri Lankan tradition, the guardian deity of the sacred mountain is Saman Deviyo.
For centuries, this spiritual belief has been closely connected with the mountain known as Samanala Kanda and the pilgrimage traditions surrounding it. Even today, this devotion lives strongly in the hearts of pilgrims.

When standing at the foot of the mountain…
When taking the first steps into the dark night…
A single prayer fills the mind with faith:

✨ **“With the blessings of Saman Deviyo, may our pilgrimage to Sri Pada be successful.”**

📿 The journey to Sri Pada is not just a mountain climb…
It is **a path where faith, devotion, and spirituality come together as one.**

The **Raja Mawatha**—the Royal Path
The journey begins in the quiet village of **Palabaddala**, nestled among the foothills of the Sabaragamuwa region.
Here, the forest closes in and the sounds of the modern world fade away.
For generations, pilgrims have begun their ascent from this very place.
The Raja Mawatha trail is known as one of the most demanding routes to the sacred mountain.
But it is also one of the most spiritually rewarding.
As the path rises through dense rainforest, the air grows cooler.
Bird calls echo through the canopy, while mist drifts across the mountainside.

Sri Palabaddala – Secrets and Miracles of the Name
🛕 The Heart of the Sri Pada Raja Mawatha

The importance of Palabaddala is enhanced by its location on the famous road to Siripada via the Ratnapura – Palabaddala trail. This road is also known as the “King’s Road”.

Chronicles say that King Valagamba, while fleeing from the Chola invasion and hiding in the forest, found the Siripada site while chasing a deer. It is said that this incident was considered a divine revelation.

It is also said that King Vijayabahu I gave away villages to provide facilities to pilgrims, and King Nissankamalla used this road many times, building rest stops along the way.

**Palabaddala** is a village in the Ratnapura district that humbly walks freely on the sacred Siripada footprints. There are many amazing legends that still exist today that fit the background of this village, which has a taste of its own name.
Palabaddala, which is said to be mentioned as “Putabaddasena” in the Pali language, translates as “Pala – Rice – Rock”. The reason for that name is a legend.
Long ago, in an era ruled by kings, a poor man went on a pilgrimage to Sri Pada. Since he did not have money to buy rice, it is said that he only took a meal made of leaves with him. At noon, he sat on a stone near a river and unwrapped the meal, and there was boiled rice! 🌾
From this miracle, the place started to be called “Pala-Rice-Rock”. It is believed that over time, the name has become “Sri Palabaddala”.
👑 A name born of the king’s desire?
Another legend says that King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe had a desire to eat “Pala Mallumath Ekka Rice” near this area. The villagers fulfilled that desire and named the village “Pala + Rice + Dola”, which later became “Palabaddala”.
Although it is a story, the affectionate connection with the name of the village is clear.
🌄 Culture, Faith and Tradition

Palabaddala is not just a name. It is a cultural heart that combines legends, royal stories, pilgrimages and the simple lifestyle of the villagers.
Even today, during the Siripada pilgrimage season, the footstep of pilgrims passing through this village gives new life to the history of the village.
Palabaddala…
A village of faith hidden in Pala, Rice and Stone 🌿
