For other mid-twentieth-century composers, however, it seemed increasingly as if being complicated and uncompromising was more important than producing something beautiful, entertaining or simply enjoyable.

With love

Cinematography → Cinematography branch expertise

☆ Editing → Editors
☆ Music → Music professionals
☆ Sound → Sound professionals
☆ Writing → Writers

"Technical excellence should not be judged primarily through popularity; it should be judged by people who understand the craft"

2. Cannes

"Professional diversity, not celebrity diversity"

☆ lens selection
☆ focal length
☆ camera movement
☆ framing
☆ composition
☆ lighting design
☆ exposure
☆ colour science
☆ dynamic range
☆ contrast
☆ practical lighting
☆ motivated lighting
☆ visual continuity
☆ visual storytelling
☆,camera language
☆ digital workflow

4. Music category

Film music
Film score

☆ melody
☆ harmony
☆ orchestration
☆ instrumentation
☆ thematic development
☆ leitmotif
☆ rhythm
☆ silence
☆ diegetic/non-diegetic music
☆ sound-image relationship
☆ dramatic function
☆ emotional manipulation
☆ originality
☆ mixing/mastering

Domain expertise + film-specific understanding

5. Editing

☆ shot duration
☆ continuity
☆ rhythm
☆ temporal structure
☆ spatial continuity
☆ parallel editing
☆ match cuts
☆ montage
☆ reaction shots
☆ pacing
☆ narrative information
☆ ellipsis

Acting + Direction + Screenplay + Cinematography + Editing + Sound + Music + Production Design + Theme + Cultural significance + Overall cinematic coherence

A. Technical Peer Panels

☆ Cinematography
ප්‍රවීණ cinematographers + film academics

☆ Editing
senior editors + film scholars

☆ Music
film composers + music academic

☆ Sound
sound designers + re-recording/mixing engineers

☆ Visual Effects

→ VFX professionals + relevant technical experts

☆ Production Design

→ production designers + art/architecture/design professionals

☆ Costume/Make-up

→ experienced professionals + relevant academics

1 Senior Director - Jury President
2 Screenwriter
3 Actor/Actress
4 Cinematographer
5 Editor
6 Composer / Music professional
7 Sound / Technical professional
8 Film critic / Film scholar / Academic
9 Independent international film professional

11. Academic qualification

Qualification ≠ Degree only

Academic knowledge + Professional experience + Demonstrated body of work + Peer recognition

Conflict of Interest

Best Cinematography

Visual storytelling - 25%
Lighting - 20%
Composition/framing - 15%
Camera movement/lens language - 15%
Colour/image treatment - 10%
Technical ex*****on - 10%
Originality - 5%

85/100 = winner

Personal taste ≠ professional evaluation.

☆ Popular Actor
☆ Popular Actress
☆ Popular Film
☆ Audience Choice

☆ Best Cinematography
☆ Best Editing
☆ Best Sound
☆ Best Original Score
☆ Best Screenplay

① Published Jury Criteria

② Professional Diversity

Director + Writer + Actor + Cinematographer + Editor + Music + Sound + Academic/Critic ආදී විවිධ disciplines.

③ Technical Peer Review

④ Conflict-of-Interest Declaration

⑤ Mandatory Viewing

⑥ Written Evaluation

⑦ Secret Voting

Individual preferences public pressure

⑧ Independent Administration

⑨ Separation of Popular & Artistic Awards

⑩ Rotation

● Cinematography → Cinematography expertise
● Editing → Editing expertise
● Music → Music/Film-scoring expertise
● Sound → Sound expertise
● Visual Effects → VFX expertise
● Screenplay → Screenwriting expertise
● Production Design → Production-design expertise

“Popularity-based judgment” නොව - “Evidence-based professional judgment”.
“Personal taste” නොව - “Informed critical judgment”.

👑 RAVANA IN IVORY: A MYSTERIOUS TREASURE OF THE BRITISH MUSEUM 🇱🇰

Did you know that the British Museum in London holds an extraordinary 18th-century ivory figure identified as Ravaṇa, one of the most famous figures of the Ramayana tradition?

The principal object is recorded as,

British Museum No.: 1878,1101.329
Object: Figure of Ravaṇa
Material: Ivory
Date: 18th century
Recorded origin: South India
Dimensions: 26.5 × 23 × 12 cm
Department: Asia
Acquired: 1878, from Lt-Gen Augustus W. H. Meyrick
Location: Gallery 33, Display Case 66a

It is important to clarify one point: this is not an ancient Sri Lankan statue. The British Museum records its origin as South India. Its importance lies in what it reveals about the widespread artistic traditions surrounding Ravaṇa and the Ramayana across South Asia. And the British Museum holds other fascinating representations of Ravaṇa too.

1880,0.2002 - a 19th-century Company School painting depicting Ravaṇa.

1880,0.2031 - a scene showing Ravaṇa disguised as a sanyasi with Sīta.

1962,1231,0.13.32 - a South Indian painting depicting the ten-headed, twenty-armed Ravaṇa. The record also carries Egerton numbers 1167 and 1176 and Codex ID 233006.

2000,1012,0.23 - a Madhubani painting depicting Ravaṇa and Sīta.

These are separate museum objects, created in different periods and artistic traditions. Yet together they reveal something remarkable. The story of Ravaṇa was not confined to one place. It travelled through India, Sri Lanka and much of Asia, taking different artistic forms while retaining its powerful connection with the legendary Lanka of the Ramayana.

In Sri Lankan tradition, Ravaṇa remains one of the most fascinating figures associated with Lanka, inspiring centuries of folklore, literature, art and popular imagination. But we should distinguish legend from archaeology.

The British Museum objects demonstrate the extraordinary cultural and artistic life of the Ravaṇa tradition. They do not, by themselves, prove that Ravaṇa was a historical king or that the legendary events of the Ramayana occurred exactly as described. Perhaps that is what makes these objects so fascinating. A legendary king of Lanka, represented in ivory and paintings, preserved in one of the world's great museums.

🇱🇰 The story of Lanka travelled far beyond the shores of the island.

SIGIRIYA: THE ENGINEERING GENIUS OF ANCIENT SRI LANKA

Long before modern pumps, reinforced concrete and computer-aided design, the ancient engineers of Sigiriya created one of the most remarkable integrated engineering landscapes in South Asia.

Built during the reign of King Kassapa I (477–495 CE), Sigiriya was far more than a fortress. It was a carefully planned royal complex combining hydraulic engineering, structural engineering, landscape architecture, drainage and urban planning.

1. WATER WITHOUT ELECTRIC PUMPS

The Water Gardens contain pools, channels, underground conduits and fountains. Their operation demonstrates the practical use of gravity, water pressure and differences in elevation.

The fountains can still function during periods of sufficient rainfall.

2. WATER MANAGEMENT AT THE SUMMIT

The summit contained cisterns and water-retaining structures. Rather than relying on the popular but unproven claim that water was mechanically pumped hundreds of metres to the summit, archaeological evidence supports the importance of rainwater collection and storage.

The rock itself became part of the water-management system.

3. ENGINEERING WITH NATURE

The builders did not try to eliminate the natural landscape.

They worked with it.

Natural rock formations, enormous boulders, slopes and changes in elevation were incorporated into the design. This reduced unnecessary construction while creating a highly integrated architectural landscape.

4. THREE TYPES OF GARDENS

Sigiriya's landscape included:

• Geometric Water Gardens
• Boulder Gardens
• Terraced Gardens

The combination of strict geometric planning with natural geological formations is one of the site's most remarkable features.

5. A PALACE ON TOP OF A ROCK

At approximately 180 metres above the surrounding plain, the summit accommodated a substantial royal complex with palace foundations, terraces, pavilions, pathways and water-retaining structures.

Moving people, materials and water through such a difficult vertical environment required careful planning.

6. THE LION GATE

The famous Lion Gate was not merely a sculpture.

The original gigantic lion, constructed from brick and plaster, incorporated the entrance and staircase system leading towards the summit.

Today, the enormous stone paws are among the most recognisable remains of Sigiriya.

7. DRAINAGE WAS AS IMPORTANT AS WATER SUPPLY

Sigiriya's engineers had to manage tropical rainfall across steep rock surfaces, gardens, terraces, pools and structures.

The hydraulic system therefore wasn't simply about collecting water. It also involved controlling, redirecting and draining water across the complex.

8. THE MIRROR WALL

The Mirror Wall was finished with highly polished plaster, creating its famous reflective appearance.

Its sophisticated surface treatment, together with the historical graffiti preserved on it, provides another insight into the technological and cultural sophistication of the site.

THE REAL ENGINEERING GENIUS

Sigiriya does not need exaggerated claims such as “technology that modern engineers cannot understand.”

Its achievement is more impressive than that.

The ancient builders understood how to combine:

RAIN + GRAVITY + WATER STORAGE + HYDRAULICS + DRAINAGE + GEOMETRY + MASONRY + NATURAL ROCK

into one integrated royal landscape.

That is the true engineering marvel of Sigiriya.

Not a mystery.
Not a myth.
A remarkable demonstration of ancient Sri Lankan engineering knowledge.

The Engineering Marvels of Ancient Anuradhapura

Ancient Anuradhapura was far more than a religious capital. It was a remarkable centre of hydraulic, structural, civil and medical engineering.

From the interconnected Ellangawa tank cascade systems and the 87-km Yoda Ela canal to monumental structures such as Jetavanaramaya and Ruwanwelisaya, ancient engineers demonstrated sophisticated knowledge of water flow, surveying, construction, geometry and large-scale masonry.

Archaeological evidence also reveals ancient hospitals, medicinal baths, drainage systems and Jantaghara bathing facilities, showing how engineering was integrated with healthcare and public wellbeing.

Anuradhapura stands as powerful evidence of Sri Lanka’s ancient engineering genius, where technology, environment and human needs were brought together on an extraordinary scale.

“Mathematics = Intelligence”

Psychology

Level 1 — Essential Numeracy

Digital numeracy.

Level 2 — Academic Mathematics

Course-specific prerequisites.

Engineering → Advanced Mathematics requirement.

Architecture → relevant mathematics/spatial competency.

Computer Science → mathematics or equivalent quantitative competency.

Fine Arts → portfolio + practical assessment.

Music → audition + portfolio.

Drama → performance assessment.

Design → portfolio + creative assessment.

Law → language, reasoning and analytical competency.

Education → subject-specific competency.

Maths

Maths compulsory learning

Maths pass = A/L admission

Essential Numeracy →

Academic Mathematics →

Vocational Mathematics →

Creative/Aesthetic assessment →

Portfolio + competency + school-based assessment →
