Liberia to Host First-Ever Student-Led Chemistry Symposium in Gbarnga

Gbarnga, B**g County — Liberia is poised to make history on May 16, 2026, with the hosting of its first-ever Student-Led Chemistry Symposium, an initiative expected to bring together 500 students in a major push to strengthen practical science education.

The symposium, designed and organized by Chemistry educator Adam J. Kallon of LAG Foundation High School and Paul A. Rader High School, will be held under the theme, “Applying Chemistry for Problem Solving, Innovation, and Sustainable Development.”

According to Mr. Kallon, the event is aligned with the Ministry of Education’s Chemistry curriculum objectives, particularly the promotion of scientific inquiry, problem-solving skills, creativity, and practical laboratory application.

The symposium’s central objective is to enable students to demonstrate the practical application of chemical principles through experimentation and innovative solutions relevant to real-world challenges.

Students from Grades 10 to 12 will lead presentations and demonstrations on a range of topics, including water purification using separation techniques, acids and bases with natural indicators, chemical reactions and gas production, exothermic energy changes, soap making through saponification, rates of chemical reactions, and chemistry applications in sustainable agriculture.

One demonstration will show how gravel, sand, and charcoal can be used in basic water filtration, while another explores soil improvement using wood ash as a low-cost agricultural input.

Other practical experiments will examine carbon dioxide generation, reaction rates, and locally relevant chemistry applications that connect science learning to community development.

He said the event represents a pioneering effort to promote hands-on chemistry education in Liberia and could serve as a model for future student-driven scientific forums nationwide.

Adam J. Kallon, described as a pioneer in hands-on chemistry teaching initiatives in Liberian secondary schools, said the symposium seeks to inspire innovation among young people while making science more practical and relevant.

Education observers say the initiative may help strengthen STEM education and encourage greater student interest in scientific research and innovation.

The symposium will be held in Gbarnga City, B**g County, on May 16, 2026.

Senator Moye Promises Transport Bus for Cuttington University's Commuter Students

Matalay S. Kollie

Prince Kermue Moye Sr., Senator of B**g County, has pledged to purchase a bus for commuter students of Cuttington University as part of a fundraising initiative organized by the institution’s Commuter Students Association.

Speaking as Chief Launcher at the event, which invited 13 special guests, including representatives and senators, Moye reflected on his own experiences as a student at the university between 2001 and 2005 before his graduation. He recounted the challenges faced by commuter students at the time, including limited class options, strict schedules, and long travel distances from surrounding communities such as Gbarnga, Plato-ta, and Bassa town.

Moye described how students often had to travel significant distances under tight time constraints to attend early morning classes, noting that commuting required discipline and resilience. Drawing from his personal journey, he highlighted the success of his former classmates, many of whom have gone on to become professionals in fields such as medicine and banking.

He also recalled his involvement in student leadership, including serving as president of the Student Progressive Party and participating in campus development initiatives. According to Moye, these experiences shaped his commitment to supporting current students.

The senator emphasized the importance of improving transportation for commuter students, stating that those who do not face such challenges may not fully understand the difficulties involved. He concluded by reaffirming his support for the initiative and took the lead by committing to fund the purchase of a student bus, a move expected to significantly ease transportation challenges for off-campus students.

The ceremony ended with excitement, where members of the association and administrative staff cheered the senator for what they described as his continued support for the Cuttington. They lauded him for taking the initiative for the bus purchase, and called on other county officials to follow suit his development, and human-capacity building gesture.

PSI Launches Distribution of Shoes, Clothes, and Jerseys to B**g County Public Schools.

By: Dadekoli S. David

Gbarnga, B**g County — April 24, 2026 — The Presidential Special Initiative PSI, has begun distributing shoes clothing and sports jerseys to selected public schools across B**g County as part of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s drive to encourage students to take their education seriously.

The exercise kicked off Thursday at Camp Tubman Military School in Gbarnga, where members of the PSI team presented items directly to students and teachers.

According to the PSI team, students particularly girls were fitted with shoes that matched their sizes.

Students who did not find their size were provided with clothes instead.

In addition, two sets of jerseys were presented to the boys’ and girls’ sports teams of each school visited.

The initiative also extended support to teachers, recognizing their role in shaping the future of Liberian children.

In remakes, recipients expressed gratitude to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for the gesture.

Students and school administrators thanked the Liberian leader for “thinking about them” and offered prayers for God’s continued guidance and protection over the President.

The PSI is expected to continue the distribution to other selected public schools across B**g County in the coming days as part of its broader effort to promote school attendance and student welfare.

Liberia, U.S. Deepen Health Partnership with Implementation Plan Talks in Monrovia

(Monrovia, Liberia, April 21, 2026) — The Government of Liberia and the United States Government have advanced their long-standing bilateral cooperation in health, moving toward the operationalization of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), to strengthen Liberia’s health system and enhance global health security.

The Ministry of Health has led a series of consultative engagements involving international partners, key sectoral institutions, and representatives of the United States Department of State’s country team in Liberia.

These discussions have focused on harmonizing priorities, defining operational frameworks, and ensuring that implementation mechanisms align with national health goals.

As part of the next phase, a delegation from the United States’ Global Health Security team arrived in Monrovia on April 18, 2026, to support the finalization of the implementation plan and its accompanying technical tools.

A three-day consultative working meeting, convened by the Ministry of Health, is currently underway from April 21 to 23, bringing together development partners, and sector stakeholders.

The forum is expected to refine strategic priorities, clarify roles and responsibilities, and establish monitoring frameworks to guide ex*****on.

The MoU was signed on December 9, 2025, in Washington, D.C., formalizing a renewed commitment between the two governments to build a durable and resilient health system capable of preventing disease, safeguarding population health, and supporting economic growth.

The agreement was executed by Jeremy P. Lewin, Senior Official for Foreign Assistance, Humanitarian Affairs and Religious Freedom, on behalf of the United States Government, and Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Liberia.

At its core, the MoU underscores a shared strategic objective: to reinforce Liberia’s health architecture while contributing to global efforts to prevent and contain emerging and existing infectious disease threats. It also reaffirms both nations’ intent to sustain global health investments built over more than six decades of partnership.

A draft implementation plan has since been developed, setting out a comprehensive roadmap to execute the agreement over a five-year period spanning April 1, 2026, to December 31, 2030. The plan is designed to align with Liberia’s National Health Policy and Plan, as well as the government’s broader development blueprint, the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.

The Ministry of Health remains committed to working with its partners and stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the MoU, with a focus on strengthening health systems, improving service delivery, and enhancing Liberia’s preparedness and response to public health threats.

The Ministry of Health Liberia (MOH), through its Environmental and Occupational Health Unit, has successfully concluded a one-day stakeholders engagement meeting in Monrovia on April 21, 2026. The meeting comes ahead of the official launch of the Government’s Inter-Agency Food Safety & Sanitary Inspection Taskforce, scheduled for April 22, 2026.

The engagement brought together key stakeholders from businesses, government ministries, agencies, and commissions to strengthen coordination, accountability, and efficiency in ensuring food safety, water quality, sanitation, and hygiene services across the country.

Participants included representatives from the WASH Commission Liberia, Liberia National Police, Liberia Standards Authority, Ministry of Public Works Liberia, National Public Health Institute of Liberia, as well as private institutions such as D’Calabash Restaurant, Golden Gate Hotel, and Corina Hotel, among others.

During the meeting, Dr. Anthony Fortune, Assistant Minister for Vital Statistics, stressed that food safety and sanitation inspections go beyond technical concerns. He noted that they represent a critical public health priority, an economic necessity, and a fundamental human right that must be upheld.

The meeting marks a significant step toward enhancing national systems for food safety oversight and ensuring improved service delivery for all citizens.
