Do LLMs think? While it's a philosophical question (see: the Chinese Room argument), I think we have a good study for the contrary.

Harvard Business Review ran a study wherein they asked leading LLMs for a business decision across 7 core business tensions. Prompts included varying business contexts, so the answers should differ. Only a binary choice was provided.

All mostly provided the same answers, regardless of business context.

It seems training data makes LLMs prefer certain answers, even if they are "reasoning" about the context.

Adding more details helps, but only by a small margin:

"[...] adding detailed scenarios tempered the bias, the models still leaned toward their general preferences. On average, adding context to the baseline prompt shifted the share of biased responses by just 11% from baseline, sometimes increasing and sometimes decreasing the bias."

So, the "reasoning" bit does fairly little. Training data decides the answer most of the time.

What's worse – if you don't frame it as a binary choice, they'll make contradicting claims. For example, ChatGPT recommended that a business pursue both short-term and long-term gains simultaneously.

Ever wondered how much better of a deal you're getting with subscriptions over API? Found on Ed Zitron's newsletter (top read if you want to get something that isn't AI hype), calculated by She-llac. Both links in comments.

Makes you think – is the API profitable? If it isn't, things are not looking good for Anthropic.

Subscription plans also don't bill you for cache reads, while writes are discounted. With a warm cache, you're getting a 36.7x discount over the API. And that's not even calculating the increased costs of the new tokenizer (which probably is discounted for subscriptions).

How did these calculations get so precise? Anthropic (at least used to) returns float values in the usage page. Highly specific ones at that (e.g., 0.16327272727272726).

You can then use various mathematical methods to get fractions, and since usage is (used / limit), you can eventually get back the fraction. And then it's a lot of testing, data collection, and reverse engineering.

SEMRush has published 17 months of clickstream data from ChatGPT. It's what you'd expect if you're in SEO and exactly the opposite if not:

1. ChatGPT growth has stalled and has been slowly dropping since 2025/10.
2. Referral traffic still grew despite (1), BUT Google gets 20% of all ChatGPT referral traffic.
3. Only a third of all prompts use search.
4. 65% to 85% of all prompts do not match traditional search (keywords).

💡I find the 4th most insightful – a large majority of all prompts have nothing to do with commercial intent (or very little). It's a lot of "help me think this through", "do these clothes fit", "explain X Y Z".

In other words, many of the queries are ones that traditional search could not answer, or ones that would be difficult to find answers to.

🤔So what do you do? Work on SEO, perform whatever GEO is possible, but don't drop the former for the latter. LLMs are still a drop in the bucket when you compare traffic, and many of the queries are in no way related to commercial interests.
