Drew Monkman is a graduate of Université Laval (B.A. Communications, 1976) and the University of Toronto (M.A. Education, 1992). He worked as a French Immersion teacher, until retiring in 2011. For over 20 years, Drew oversaw the development of a schoolyard naturalization project in Peterborough.

Drew is a lifelong naturalist and writer whose nature column, “Our Changing Seasons,” appears regularly in the Peterborough Examiner. He is the author of three books, including Nature's Year in the Kawarthas (2002) and Nature’s Year: Changing seasons in Central and Eastern Ontario (2012). “Make sure each adult in the house also has downtime to themselves. Parents who work while managing children are always on, and that can take a toll on everyone’s patience and energy levels.”

As a prelude to our Facebook Live conversation with Siobhán Saunders, “How to Win at Working Without Beating Your Children” we are publishing a few related articles on parenting during this challenging time.

We’d love to hear you survival tactics and/or your challenges.

While seeking out articles related to our FB Live conversation next week, “How to Win at Working Without Beating Your Kids”, I was appalled at misguided advice to arrange play dates and pool childcare resources. Neither of those options support physical isolation.

This article makes much more sense.

When I worked at Victoria’s women’s shelter in Lindsay years ago in the children’s program, we stocked a video by Barbara Coloroso called, “How to Win at Parenting without Beating Your Kids.” (You will notice that I blatantly plagiarized that title for our upcoming conversation with Siobhán Saunders.) We shared that video frequently with the residents because many of them were mothers. It was kept in the video library that all could access. But it often would disappear and we would have to replace it.

Finally we smartened up. We purchased the VHS (yep, it was THAT long ago) to keep in the office. And made copies to keep in the video library. When those disappeared, we simply replaced them with more copies.

The videos disappeared because the women saw the value of Colorosso’s advice. We weren’t condoning theft or piracy. We were supporting traumatized women to be the best parents they could be. I even borrowed a copy and subjected my kids to it. Her advice was not just about parenting, it was about respecting people and their values while maintaining our self-respect and values.

And my daughters are much better parents than I was. My grandchildren have grown to be amazing adults. Except for the last one who is 15. He’s a damn fine teen.
My son has yet to be tested. He and his partner have cats.

Enjoy this video and join us next Wednesday as we discuss “How to Win at Working without Beating Your Kids” with our guest, Siobhán Saunders.

“Teens aren’t the only ones who can dance their way to mental health. Senior adults (and adults of all ages) can reap the benefits too. A small group of senior adults, ages 65-91, was recently studied in North Dakota. After taking 12 weeks of Zumba (a dance fitness class), the seniors reported improved moods and cognitive skills. Not to mention increased strength and agility.”
