Minister of Agriculture Madalitso Sam Kawale has today graced the official launch of Farm Radio Trust's (FRT) Mlimi Mobile App which will enable farmers to access agricultural advisory services and promote their products and services online.

Speaking during the launch at the AAEW2025 in Lilongwe, Kawale said the innovation will be a cornstone in transforming the country's agriculture sector by allowing farmers to access real time advisory services which are essential for an improved productivity and agriculture commercilisation and Industrilisation.

He also pointed out that the application alligns well with Malawi's vision 2063 agenda of adopting advanced technologies for the mordenisation and tranformation of agricultural sector.

On her part, Programs Director for FRT Flora Khomani said the application will empower smallholder farmers with digital Agricultural Extension services regadless of distance or time which have for so long been a challenge.

The application offers a range of features, including real-time agricultural advice, weather updates, market information, and pest and disease management tips.

As part of boosting agricultural advisory services among the farmers, Farm Radio Trust, in partnership with the Transforming Agriculture Through Diversification and Entrepreneurship (TRADE) Programme, conducted roadshows at Mpingu Trading Centre (Mpingu EPA) and M'bang'ombe Trading Centre (Chigonthi EPA)in Lilongwe.

Farmers were engaged through advisory services delivered by the FRT team and district officers. The team also raised awareness of a powerful combo of ICT tools—Mlimi Hotline Call Centre, SMS Push Service, and the Mlimi App—designed to connect farmers with timely agricultural information.

As part of the engagement, time-based advisory services focused on value chains for soybeans, groundnuts, and sunflower were shared with farmers in both Mpingu and Chigonthi EPAs.

The roadshows were full of energy, featuring interactive dramas, dancing, singing, and poetry that made learning both fun and impactful!
