Mwanamvekha represents President Mutharika at Nzama Parish 125th Anniversary

On September 19th 2026, Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralization Hon. Joseph Mathyola Mwanamvekha (MP) represented His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika at St Mary’s Nzama Catholic Parish in Ntcheu at a celebration marking 125 years of evangelization in Malawi.

In his speech, Mwanamvekha highlighted the Catholic church’s longstanding contribution to Malawi through evangelization, education, healthcare and social development.

He conveyed President Mutharika’s gratitude to the church and called for continued collaboration between Government and the Church in advancing Malawi Vision 2063.

During the event, Mwanamvekha handed over an upright refrigerator on behalf of His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and he also donated K2 million to the Church.

He also congratulated the clergy, parish leadership, organising committee and the rest of the congregation for reaching the historic milestone, urging the church and young people to continue promoting unity, integrity, hard work and service to the nation.

Mwanamvekha Represents President Mutharika at 125th Anniversary of Catholic Church in Malawi

Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralization Hon. Joseph Mathyola Mwanamvekha, MP, is this morning representing His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika at St. Mary’s (Nzama) Catholic Parish in Ntcheu District, where the Catholic Church in Malawi is celebrating 125 years of evangelization. The national jubilee celebration is being held today, 19 September 2026, at Nzama, recognised as the first Catholic parish in Malawi.

Mwanamvekha has joined thousands of Catholic faithful gathered for the historic Quasquicentennial Jubilee, held under the theme “Rooted in Christ, Sent for a Mission: Celebrating 125 Years of Evangelization in Malawi.”

The Minister is accompanied by the Principal Secretary for Administration in the Ministry of Finance Mr. Patrick Liphava, Hon. Malowa, Member of Parliament for Nguludi Constituency, Blantyre Deputy Mayor Councillor Gerald Lipikwe, among other dignitaries.

The Bankers Association of Malawi (BAM) has commended President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika for championing reforms that are steering the country's economy in the right direction.

BAM President Philip Madinga made the remarks today at Kamuzu Palace after meeting with President Mutharika.

Madinga cited falling inflation—which dropped from 28.2% in August 2025 to 20.0% in August 2026—and a lower interest rate, which moved from 26.0% in August 2025 to 24.0% this August, as key indicators that the economy is moving in the right direction.

"We have commended the President because, since he returned to power, we have seen economic progress. Inflation is going down, and significant strides are being made toward economic recovery," Madinga said.

Speaking after meeting with the Bankers Association, President Mutharika expressed enthusiasm that BAM is prepared to partner with the government in key sectors, such as tourism, agriculture, infrastructure, and mining.

"We had an extremely fruitful meeting. Crucially, we have agreed to work together to advance the country's economy in key sectors such as agriculture, mining, and infrastructure development," President Mutharika said.

Mwanamvekha Calls for Private Capital to Support Malawi’s Infrastructure Development

Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralization Hon. Joseph Mathyola Mwanamvekha MP has called for stronger partnerships between Government, the private sector, development partners and communities to mobilise sustainable financing for infrastructure development in Malawi.

Speaking as Guest of Honour last night at the Public Private Partnership Commission (PPPC) Financing Forum at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, Mwanamvekha said infrastructure is critical to achieving the Malawi 2063 and First 10-Year Implementation Plan (MIP-1) goals.

Mwanamvekha highlighted key infrastructure priorities including power generation, roads, railways, industrial parks, export processing zones, airports, inland water transport and access to the sea.

He said Malawi faces challenges such as limited fiscal space, high borrowing costs and perceived investment risks, while noting that Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), blended financing and innovative instruments such as infrastructure bonds and green financing can help unlock private capital.

The function was attended by Minister of Information Dr. Shadreck Namalomba MP, Hon. Charles Mhango, Deputy Minister of Health Hon. Charles Chalambula MP, Minister of Energy Hon. Jean Mathanga MP, Deputy Minister of Education Hon. Francis Folley MP, FDH Bank CEO William Mpinganjira, Standard Bank Malawi CEO Philip Madinga, Secretary to the Treasury Dr. Cliff Chiunda and other government officials and stakeholders.

COUNCILS GET CDF FUNDS.

Government has released 85.5 billion Malawi kwacha for CDF projects across the country .

This has been announced by the ministry of finance in a statement signed by it's principal Secretary ,Peterson Ponderani.

The ministry says the money has been released to 30 out of 36 local councils that have finished the procurement process and identified contractors for the projects .

They added that the release is part of efforts to ensure that CDF projects start and complete on time.

" The funds are meant for advance payment to contractors to mobilise and commence implementation of various CDF projects " the statement reads.

Meanwhile the government has also released 5.4 billion kwacha for project management costs and 2.8 billion kwacha for sports development ,creative arts and innovation .

One of the Malawi Congress Party members of Parliament,Ayuba James has commended the government for timely release of funds.

" APM si munthu wamba,I thought it was just a campaign promise but now it is becoming reality on ground " James said.

Mwanamvekha Hails EIB-Centenary Bank Partnership

Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralization Hon Joseph Mathyola Mwanamvekha MP has hailed the partnership between the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Centenary Bank Malawi, saying it will help expand financial inclusion and access to capital for Malawians.

Speaking at the official launch at BICC in Lilongwe, Mwanamvekha said EIB is providing €7.5 million (about MK15.6 billion) through Centenary Bank to support small agricultural businesses and farmers, with a focus on sustainable agriculture, women and youth empowerment.

Mwanamvekha said the partnership will help farmers invest in better inputs, enable small businesses to grow and create jobs, describing financial inclusion as an important tool for improving livelihoods and economic growth in Malawi.

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has praised the relationship between the Government and the private sector, saying it has the potential to develop the nation.

The President said this after meeting with the Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) today at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

He noted that the Government has maintained a close relationship with the MCCCI and called for continued collaboration, particularly in key initiatives such as the El Niño response, trade, and other economic priorities.

MCCCI President Ronald Ngwira expressed gratitude for the opportunity to meet with the President and pledged the business community's support in responding to the impact of El Niño and boosting trade.

Seoul - Korea

Mwanamvekha holds talks with the Korean Deputy Minister of Finance in Seoul.

Malawi’s finance team is working overtime in Seoul—turning the KOAFEC conference into a deal-making hub for grants, investment and technical support.

Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha has met with AfDB President Sidi Ould Tah and South Korea’s Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy Jinsung Moon to push for resources to boost Malawi’s budget.

“The meeting has offered us an opportunity to engage further with the Bank but also the Korean government.

The two partners are willing to partner us in our development efforts,” said the minister, who also shared investment opportunities available in Malawi with the Korean deputy minister of finance.

“Korea says it is ready to explore investment opportunities in Malawi but also help us with skills transfer in technology. This is important if we are to create a productive economy,” said the minister.

Minister Moon said Korea remains committed to supporting African partners, positioning Malawi to tap into grants, concessional loans and private-sector opportunities that could boost key sectors.
