Zero under-five deaths were recorded in the MMH catchment area following our annual malaria spray campaign. Not directly measured, but very significant too are the other positive effects on health, economic productivity, school results and child growth. Prolonged rains created ideal circumstances for mosquitoes to breed, and indeed many more mosquitoes were counted compared to last year. This is therefore a very positive result!
Thank you to Finnebrogue and Eastern Produce Malawi Limited for the support!

EPM FOR MORE CSR PROJECTS IN MULANJE AND THYOLO

Eastern Produce Malawi (EPM) Limited, is committed to implementing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects in the two districts of Mulanje and Thyolo.

We recently constructed a classroom and drilled a borehole at Katole Primary School and Ranken village respectively in Mulanje district.

Speaking on Wednesday after handing over the classroom and the borehole to the community, our Managing Director David Reynolds said the relationship between the company and the surrounding community is just good.

He said this is the reason the company does not hesitate to respond to the needs of the community whenever funds are available.

“We are part of the community and we find it necessary to implement developmental projects within and beyond our surrounding communities,” said Reynolds.

Head teacher of Katole Primary School, Sammy Aramson thanked the company for constructing the classroom at the school.
“With this structure, we are close to reaching the country’s recommended 1 to 60 classroom- learners ratio,” said Aramson.

Assistant Coordinating Primary Education Advisor for Mathambi Education Zone Chipiliro Ngochera asked the company to construct a secondary school within the area saying the nearest Bango Community Day Secondary School is at a distance of over ten kilometers.

And speaking after receiving the borehole, village head Ranken said shortage of water is now a thing of the past and he thanked EPM for the gesture.

One of the women present at the handover ceremony, Grace Lloyd, told Zodiak Online that there was only one borehole in the village which was not enough to serve over 200 households in the village.

“To show our appreciation, we will ensure that we take care of this borehole with guidance from the borehole committee,” said Lloyd.

According to EPM’s Corporate Affairs Manager Rabson Kachilele, 10 million Malawi kwacha was used on the classroom project while 9 million Malawi kwacha has been spent on the borehole.

"The company and the community live together. There is no other way. We live together hand in hand hence the maintenance of the bridge," said Reynolds.

In their remarks, Traditional Authority Njema and District Roads Supervisor, Lonjezo Chigongono, thanked Eastern Produce for the gesture. They said the structure will ease people's access to essential services including education and health.

"They have done well. They have been helping us in terms of roads and school blocks," added Chigongono.

Last week our members of staff took their time to donate food and non-food items worth over K2,500,00 to the Cyclone Freddy survivors in Traditional Authority Njema in Mulanje district.

The staff reached out to 120 households from Nanchidwa, Tcherekere, Khabwiri and Phwera areas who mostly were smallholder tea growers under Thuchila Tea Association (TTA).

Leader of the initiative Salani Njaya who is the Out-growers Development Manager said EPM staff and directors contributed cash amounts ranging from K5000 to K250, 000 per person and clothes, shoes, and blankets.

“The initial cash contributions amounted to K1, 035,000 and EPM as a company supported us with another K1, 035,000 to make it a total of K2, 070, 000,” said Njaya.

He said the money was used to purchase 60 bags of maize (which was milled into flour), sugar, soap, salt and soya pieces. “Each beneficiary household received 25 Kilograms of maize flour, 2 packets of sugar, salt, tablets of soap and packets of soya pieces plus some pieces of clothes, pairs of shoes or a blanket,” added Njaya.

Speaking on behalf of EPM employees, Mr. Rabson Kachilele the Corporate Affairs Manager asked the beneficiaries to put to good use the donation and other donations that are being received from various individuals, government, non-governmental organizations and private companies.

As Eastern Produce Malawi (EPM) Limited continues with its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) today, Thursday officially handed over a MK25 million Victim Support Unit at Thyolo Police Station.

Commissioner of Police for South East Region Chikondi Chingaza who recieved the facility on behalf of the Malawi Police Service (MPS) said that this is the kind partnership which MPS expects.

"This structure is very crucial in prevention and management of Gender Based Violence (GBV) cases and we thank EPM management through you, Mr. Reynolds, the company Managing Director for building this facility at this police station," said Commissioner Chingaza.

Taking his turn, Senior Chief Nchiramwera of Thyolo asked other stakeholders to emulate EPM's gesture.

"We need your financial support to renovate or even construct new district police offices or units in the district," said the Senior Chief.

Both Commissioner Chingaza and Senior Chief Nchiramwera said the police officers are operating in old infrastructures which are in poor and demotivating states hence their call for partners to support MPS in infrastructural development.

EPM Managing Director, David Reynolds indicated that apart from establishing grievance policies and empowering their women staff through education scholarships, the VSU symbolises their firm stance against Gender Based Violence (GBV) in the district.

CYCLONE FREDDY: OUR INTERVENTIONS

Mulanje and Thyolo are two of the ten (10) districts that were hit hard by the recent Cyclone Freddy. EMP quickly took a position to help the affected communities, who were in dire need of essential supplies, in a number of ways.

In liaison with the two district councils and local community leaders, EPM provided over 80 tons of firewood to victims’ rescue centers in Thyolo, Mulanje and Blantyre districts to facilitate preparation of meals and also to keep the survivors warm in the centers.

The company assisted Mulanje District Disaster Management office with milling of maize for distribution to beneficiaries in the affected areas. Additionally, EPM facilitated assessment of the impact of cyclone Freddy and distribution of relief items through provision of fuel and transport for easy access of hard-to-reach parts of the affected areas particularly in Mulanje after the cyclone had left the road infrastructure heavily damaged.

District Commissioner David Kayiwonanga Gondwe thanked EPM for quickly responding to the disaster.

"In fact EPM was the first private company to assist us with firewood, transport and milling of maize, we say thank you," said Gondwe.

According to EPM’s Corporate Affairs Manager, Rabson Kachilele, the company responded quickly and stands ready to support the affected communities whenever possible.

EPM PLEDGES TO SUPPORT DOMESTIC WATER CHLORINATION PROGRAMS

EPM has pledged to support domestic water chlorination programs for Malamulo Adventist and Mulanje Mission Hospitals.

The programs involve disinfecting domestic water at household level in the catchment areas of the two institutions with chlorine to make the water clean and potable.

The company has pledged to provide HTH Chlorine every month to each institution until December 2023. The support is expected to benefit a total population of around 150,000 within the catchment areas of the institutions.

More than half of the villages in these institutions catchment areas supply labour to some of EPM’s tea and macadamia estates in Thyolo and Mulanje.

The domestic water chlorination program ensures access to clean water thereby mitigating the communities risk of exposure to waterborne diseases.

*EPM partners with MPS in afforestation.*

Eastern Produce Malawi (EPM) in partnership with the Malawi Police Service has today, Thursday planted 250 tree seedlings at Mulanje Police Station.

EPM Managing Director David Reynolds told Zodiak Online that it is important to cover all bare grounds with trees and he said this should be the role of every citizen in Malawi.
“We are committed to assist people in afforestation and just like every Malawian, EPM is also affected by the effects of deforestation and as you know we are in agriculture industry which heavily rely on water and in the absence of trees we cannot have this water for the growth of our tea,” said Reynolds.

He said this year they have raised over 60 thousand tree seedlings and they are ready for planting.

Commissioner of Police for South East Region Chikondi Chingadza said the Malawi Police Service has not been spared by effects of climate change like floods and storms that are as a result of careless cutting down of trees.

She said this is the reason the law enforcers are also encouraged to participate in restoration of the environment.
“We say thank you to EPM for supporting us with these tree seedlings which we believe will make a difference at this police formation and let me urge all police officers in the region and the whole country to plant trees around their offices and houses,” said Commissioner Chingadza.

According to EPM’s Corporate Affairs Manager, Rabson Kachilele, the company plans to launch another tree planting exercise next week in Thyolo.

“WE EYE UPDATED SKILLS FOR OUR MEDICAL TEAMS”
Eastern Produce Malawi (EPM) Limited on Tuesday organized a day long refresher training for clinicians and other senior health workers working in the company’s health facilities.
The training’s lead facilitator Dr. Trasizio January from Mulanje Mission Hospital said the training basically focused on Respiratory Tract Infections, Musculoskeletal Disorders and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma and epilepsy.
“Respiratory Tract Infections in layman language are infections attacking ways of respiration which include the mouth, airways and the lungs and they are caused by either virus or bacteria while musculoskeletal pain comes due to infections, trauma, degenerated disease and also autoimmune diseases,” said Dr. January.
Dr. January said these conditions are killing many people but they are manageable by well-trained health personnel. He said it is important for senior health workers like the clinicians to have vast knowledge on diagnosis and management of these diseases.
Grace Matimati Njoloma who is a nurse at Phwazi Tea Estate, one of EPM’s estates said such refresher trainings are crucial as the country and the whole world is registering strange diseases.

“Apart from treating patients at our health facility, we also conduct health talks within the estate and surrounding villages,” said Njoloma who is also a Senior Research Nurse.

EPM’s Corporate Affairs Manager Rabson Kachilele said the company wants its clinicians to have sufficient and up-to-date knowledge and skills to enable them conduct proper diagnostics of diseases and conditions in their respective health facilities.
“NCDs are a significant portion of the cases that our health facilities continuously receive. It is therefore important for our clinicians to have knowledge and skills that will enable them to manage these cases and proper diagnosis is a fundamental aspect,” said Kachilele.

According to Kachilele, EPM has 18 estates and each estate has a health facility.
