During a 1951 conversation with Dorothy Grafly, Calder detailed the process by which he conceives of his mobiles. “I start at the small ends, perhaps with leaf shapes; then balance by progressions until I think I have determined the point of support,” he explains. “This is very important, as there can only be one such point, and it must be right. To make sure, before I use my wire, I tie the two main parts together with string. If they balance I can go ahead. Always I work upward, linking the parts together. The size and angle of the shapes, and what to use next, all are a mere matter of taste.” The hanging mobile Big Red, which spans over nine feet, resides in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, where it is currently on view.
