ONE D£AD, 10 INJURED IN KAFUE ROAD CRASH

Kafue, May 27, 2026 (SMART EAGLES)

A fatal road traffic accident in Kafue has claimed the life of one person and left 10 others seriously injured after two vehicles collided head-on along the Great North Road.

Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said the accident occurred around 19:00 hours on Tuesday at Mhango Curve in Kafue District.

Mr Chilabi said the accident involved a Toyota Hiace minibus registration number AIE 7650, driven by 36-year-old Muzondewa Hamapongo of Siavonga, which was travelling from north to south with 11 passengers on board.

The other vehicle involved was an unregistered Toyota Landcruiser driven by 31-year-old Justine Njobvu of Chirundu, who was travelling in the opposite direction.

"Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident occurred when the driver of the Toyota Landcruiser attempted to overtake at a curve and collided head-on with the Toyota Hiace minibus, which was travelling in its lane," Mr Chilabi said.

The Police Spokesperson said the collision resulted in fatal head injuries to an unidentified female passenger aged between 25 and 30 years, who was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kafue District General Hospital.

Mr Chilabi said the deceased’s body has been deposited in the hospital mortuary awaiting identification and a postmortem examination.

He added that the driver of the Toyota Landcruiser escaped unhurt, while the driver of the minibus sustained minor injuries.

"Ten passengers sustained serious injuries and have been admitted to Kafue District General Hospital, where they are receiving treatment," he said.

Mr Chilabi said police have instituted investigations into the accident.

He further urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads, particularly when approaching curves and other dangerous sections.

"Improper overtaking should be avoided, as it is one of the main causes of fatal road traffic accidents," Mr Chilabi warned.

He also called on drivers to adhere to road traffic rules and regulations to safeguard lives.

ECZ SHOULD DISQUALIFY UPND FOLLOWING ADOPTION CONFUSION AND VIOLENCE - ACTIONAID

26th May 2026

ACTIONAID Country Director Faides Tembatemba says the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) should have disqualified the UPND from participating in the upcoming elections following the widespread violence and confusion spawned by the chaotic adoption process.

Tembatemba adds that the amended Electoral Process Act gives the ECZ power to suspend or disqualify a political party or candidate for breach of code of conduct, stating that ECZ would have disqualified the opposition for acting the way UPND acted.

The UPND adoption process was characterised by confusion, as the party had issued adoption certificates to more than one person for a similar position in some instances. In an interview, Saturday, Tembatemba said the violence that took place during the adoption process and filing of nominations was unacceptable.
