Hit by the biggest energy supply shock in decades during the Middle East war, import-dependent India is expanding domestic crude exploration, its oil minister says.
India, the world’s third-largest importer of oil and the second-largest buyer of liquefied petroleum gas, faced major disruptions due to restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz during the conflict between the US and Iran.

With a temporary US-Iran deal in place to pause hostilities, oil and gas shipments are flowing through the Gulf waterway again, and restrictions and price hikes in India are being rolled back.

Asian stocks wobbled on Monday as Iran and the United States agreed to halt recent hostilities that had cast a shadow over an interim peace deal, with oil prices buoyed by uncertainty and the dollar standing tall near a one-year high.
A return to diplomacy in the Middle East would follow several days of tit-for-tat strikes since an Iranian projectile hit a cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz last week, with both sides accusing each other of breaking an interim ceasefire.

Futures for S&P 500 and Nasdaq gained 0.4% in early trading. South Korea’s KOSPI fell nearly 2%, while Japan’s Nikkei slipped 1%, leaving MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares down 0.4%.

South Korean stocks bounced back Wednesday from the previous day’s rout, while the rest of Asia fought to recover from a region-wide sell-off amid lingering concern about the AI spending boom.
Oil prices extended losses to sit around their lowest levels since the early days of the Middle East crisis, even as strain emerged in talks to bring an end to the conflict.

Investors tentatively got back on the horse in Seoul as they picked up the pieces following a 10% collapse Tuesday in the Kospi that was led by 12% losses in chip giants and market heavyweights SK Hynix and Samsung.

Ships have begun sailing through the Strait of Hormuz under a new scheme by the UN’s shipping agency to evacuate vessels trapped there by the conflict, a spokesperson said on Wednesday.
The initiative, which has taken months to conclude, will enable hundreds of ships with some 11,000 seafarers stranded in the Gulf to sail through Hormuz, the International Maritime Organization said on Tuesday.

“Ships have already begun to pass under the plan,” an IMO spokesperson said on Wednesday, declining to provide any details of the vessels that had crossed.

Traders remain sanguine about Malaysia’s financial outlook even after officials warned the government may miss its deficit target this year, according to a closely watched financial-market metric.
The so-called bond-swap spread that tracks the difference between interest-rate swaps and government bond yields for Malaysia is positive 12 basis points, whereas similar gauges are negative for many regional economies, including Thailand, South Korea and India.

A positive swap spread suggests investors see less fiscal and issuance risk. This occurs because government bond yields react more strongly to the outlook for debt supply than interest-rate swaps do.
