When your chicks just arrived, this is what you should do immediately:

Prepare the brooder: Make sure it's clean and warm (around 32–35°C or 90–95°F). Use a heat lamp or brooder heater or charcoal to keep your broader worm.

Provide clean water: Add electrolytes or vitamins to help them recover from travel stress. Dip their beaks gently in the water so they can learn to drink.

Feed chick starter: Use a high-quality chick starter feed with at least 18–20% protein.

Observe behavior: They should be active and peeping softly. Huddling means they’re cold; spreading far from the heat source may mean it’s too hot.

Keep bedding clean: Use paper for the first few days, then switch to wood shavings.

I still remember my early days in poultry farming how scared I was to vaccinate my birds! My fear stemmed from multiple vaccine failures, which led to devastating disease outbreaks on my farm. Each time I stocked new birds, they got infected, and I kept losing money over and over again. Looking back, I realize that my ignorance and inexperience turned my poultry journey into a frustrating trial and error process.

If you vaccinate incorrectly, you're not protecting your birds you’re introducing sickness and inviting losses. Wrong vaccination is like opening the gates for disease to wreak havoc on your farm.

To help you avoid these costly mistakes, here are some essential tips for proper poultry vaccination:

1. Source Your Vaccines from a Reliable Veterinary Shop

Always buy your vaccines from a reputable veterinary store that knows how to properly store and handle them. Many vaccine failures happen due to negligence on the part of vendors who do not maintain the required cold chain. If a vaccine is compromised before it even reaches your farm, failure is inevitable.

2. Withdraw Water Before Vaccination

At least one to two hours before vaccinating, remove all drinking water from your birds. This ensures they become thirsty and quickly consume the vaccine treated water once offered.

Time the birds as they drink. The vaccination process should last between 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours no longer.
Do not leave the vaccinated water for them all day. Any leftover vaccine must be discarded far away from your farm to prevent contamination.

As you vaccinate, move around and ensure every bird drinks the water. Missing even a few birds could compromise the immunity of your entire flock.

3. Vaccinate Early in the Morning
The best time to vaccinate is early in the morning before the sun gets hot. High temperatures can reduce vaccine potency and stress the birds.

4. Provide Post-Vaccination Care

After vaccination, clean the drinkers thoroughly and offer your birds fresh, clean water with electrolytes or probiotics to help ease any stress. The following day, you can add multivitamins to their water to boost their immunity.
