A BROKEN SPIRIT IS A BATTLEFIELD
When disappointments, betrayals, losses, delays and the vicissitudes of life hit a person repeatedly, sometimes what eventually breaks is not their body, career or bank account—it is their spirit.
And Scripture tells us how serious that is:
“The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?” — Proverbs 18:14
You can survive a bad situation when your spirit is strong. You can survive a financial loss. You can survive rejection. You can survive people walking away. You can survive a season that refuses to make sense.
But what happens when what you have been using to survive becomes wounded?
This is why Satan's attack on Job is so revealing.
God told Satan concerning Job, “Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.” (Job 2:6)
Think about that.
His possessions could disappear.
His children could be taken.
His body could be afflicted.
His reputation could collapse.
His friends could misunderstand him.
But Job himself was still there.
Everything Job had was not Job.
And as long as Job remained, there was still something God could rebuild from.
That is why the end of Job's story is so powerful. God did not need to recover the exact sheep, camels and circumstances Job had lost. He still had Job. And because Job remained, restoration had material to work with.
There is a prophetic picture of this in Job 14:
“For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again...”
The tree may be gone, but the stump remains.
Never underestimate the theology of the stump.
A stump looks like evidence of what has been destroyed, but to God it is evidence of what is still alive.
You may have lost branches.
You may have lost leaves.
You may have lost fruit.
You may have lost seasons.
BUT THE STUMP IS STILL THERE.
And Job says that “through the scent of water it will bud.”
God does not always need to give you back yesterday. Sometimes He only needs to bring living water to what remains of you.
But Psalm 51 takes the revelation even further.
David says:
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” — Psalm 51:17
Now this is astonishing.
Proverbs says a wounded spirit can become unbearable.
But David says a broken spirit can become a sacrifice.
So brokenness can go in two directions.
A broken spirit is useful to Satan, and a broken spirit is useful to God.
Satan wants your breaking to become bitterness, isolation, unbelief, cynicism, self-destruction and hopelessness.
God wants your breaking to become surrender, tenderness, dependence, humility, depth, compassion and consecration.
The difference is not simply that you were broken.
The difference is WHO RECEIVED THE BROKEN PIECES.
Give brokenness to Satan and he will turn your wound into a weapon against your future.
Give brokenness to God and He will turn your wound into an altar.
This is why you must never waste a breaking season.
YOUR BREAKING POINT CAN BECOME YOUR MAKING POINT.
The disappointment that could have hardened you can deepen you.
The betrayal that could have made you suspicious of everybody can make you discerning.
The loss that could have destroyed your faith can strip your faith of everything superficial.
The season that reduced you to a stump can introduce you to the God who knows how to make stumps sprout again.
So when life breaks something inside you, the first question is not merely:
“How quickly can I recover?”
There is a deeper question:
“WHO WILL I GIVE MY BROKENNESS TO?”
Because hell has plans for broken people.
BUT SO DOES GOD.
Satan says, “Give me your brokenness and I will make you bitter.”
God says, “Give Me your brokenness and I will make it an offering.”
Satan says, “This is where your story ends.”
God looks at the stump and says,
“I CAN STILL WORK WITH THIS.”
You are not merely what left you.
You are not merely what failed.
You are not merely what was taken.
If the stump remains, there is hope for the tree.
So guard your spirit.
And when you cannot keep it from breaking, decide where the broken pieces will go.
Because a broken spirit can become Satan's workshop—or God's altar.
