PBAT,
THE VISIONARY LEADER

Tinubu Ends 46-Year Wait as Ajaokuta Steel Resumes With 20-Year NNPCL Gas Deal

Nigeria’s long-standing ambition to revive the Ajaokuta Steel Company has received a major breakthrough following the signing of a 20-year Gas Supply Agreement (GSA) and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited (ASCL) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). The agreement is being described as one of the most significant milestones in Nigeria’s industrial history.

The landmark deal guarantees a stable gas supply to the steel complex for the next two decades, addressing one of the biggest challenges that had prevented the commencement of full-scale steel production since the project was initiated over 46 years ago. Reliable gas supply has long been identified by investors as a critical requirement for the successful operation of the integrated steel plant.

The agreement was facilitated under the leadership of the Managing Director/CEO of Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited, Prof. Nasir Abdulsalam, and was signed during the 2026 NOG Energy Week. Beyond gas supply, the MoU also commits both organisations to broader collaboration aimed at producing steel materials required for Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, including pipes for strategic infrastructure projects.

Under the agreement, Ajaokuta Steel will receive firm and interruptible gas volumes to power the steel complex, laying the foundation for the plant’s gradual return to production. The Federal Government believes the development will restore investor confidence and accelerate the revival of Nigeria’s steel sector.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the development, noting that the revival of Ajaokuta Steel could significantly reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported steel products, strengthen local manufacturing, create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, and stimulate economic diversification. The project is also expected to support downstream industries in construction, engineering, automobile manufacturing, defence production, and infrastructure development
The Tinubu administration has consistently identified the revival of Ajaokuta Steel as a cornerstone of its industrialisation agenda. Government officials say the latest agreement represents a major step toward transforming the steel complex into a functional industrial hub capable of driving long-term economic growth and supporting Nigeria’s broader manufacturing ambitions.
