HON. BABAGANA BUHARI
Gubernatorial Candidate, Borno State
In a recent interview, Hon. Babagana Buhari strongly questioned the priorities of government spending, citing the recent approval of ₦12.9 billion for just 54 beneficiaries, equivalent to approximately ₦239 million per person.
He noted that while billions of naira are being spent on a few individuals, thousands of students across Borno State continue to struggle to pay tuition fees and other educational expenses. Students at the University of Maiduguri, Kashim Ibrahim University, Ramat Polytechnic, and other tertiary institutions face severe financial hardship, forcing many to defer admissions, drop out, or depend on loans and family sacrifices to remain in school.
Hon. Buhari argued that if such resources were distributed more broadly, thousands of students could receive meaningful educational support. He called for greater transparency, accountability, and people-oriented policies that directly benefit ordinary citizens.
Addressing youth unemployment, he expressed concern over the increasing number of young people from Maiduguri and across Borno State who are migrating to countries such as Libya and Algeria in search of economic opportunities due to the lack of jobs at home. He described this trend as a painful loss of talent and potential that should be contributing to the development of Nigeria.
To tackle unemployment and economic hardship, he pledged to support industrialization, youth entrepreneurship, and investment-driven growth. He emphasized the need to revive and strengthen strategic industries such as Ajaokuta, transforming them into internationally competitive economic hubs capable of creating jobs and stimulating local production. He also promised export and import support programs, business incentives, and policies that would attract investors and empower young entrepreneurs.
Hon. Buhari further pledged to abolish taxes imposed on Keke Napep operators, stating that government has failed to provide adequate intervention, support, or empowerment for many of these hardworking citizens. According to him, it is unfair to burden struggling transport operators with taxes while offering little assistance to improve their livelihoods.
On healthcare, he highlighted the difficulties faced by patients suffering from kidney-related illnesses who cannot afford dialysis treatment. He vowed that, if elected, he would work to make dialysis services free and accessible, stressing that no citizen should lose their life because they are unable to pay for essential medical care.
Human life is precious. Government resources should be used to improve the lives of our people, support education, create jobs, empower businesses, and provide quality healthcare. Leadership must put the people first and ensure that every citizen has a fair opportunity to succeed," he stated.
