ETHIOPIAN FUN FACTS *They have their own calendar and time system*
- *Calendar*: Ethiopia uses the Ge’ez calendar, which is about 7-8 years behind the Gregorian calendar. So while it’s 2026 elsewhere, it’s 2018/2019 in Ethiopia right now.
- *Time*: Ethiopians count time starting at sunrise, which is 6:00 AM by Western clocks. So 7:00 AM to us is 1:00 in Ethiopia. It messes with tourists every time.
2. *Coffee originated there*
Legend says a goat herder named Kaldi noticed his goats got energetic after eating red coffee cherries in Kaffa region. That’s where “coffee” likely gets its name. Ethiopia still has wild coffee forests and the coffee ceremony is a big social ritual.
3. *It was never colonized*
Ethiopia is one of only two African countries that was never fully colonized. It defeated Italy at the Battle of Adwa in 1896. Italy briefly occupied it from 1936-1941, but Ethiopia regained independence. That’s why Addis Ababa has the African Union HQ.
4. *They have 13 months*
The Ethiopian calendar has 12 months of 30 days each, plus a 13th month called Pagumē with 5 or 6 days. So their year has 13 months.
5. *Lucy was found there*
The 3.2-million-year-old hominid fossil “Lucy” was discovered in the Afar region in 1974. Ethiopia’s often called the cradle of humanity.
6. *Rock-hewn churches you won’t believe*
In Lalibela, there are 11 medieval churches carved directly into solid rock, underground. Built in the 12th century with no mortar, just chisels. Some are connected by tunnels. UNESCO site and still used today.
7. *Food you eat with your hands*
Injera is a spongy sourdough flatbread made from teff grain. You tear pieces of it to scoop up stews like doro wat and misir wat. No utensils needed. Teff is gluten-free and only grows well in the Ethiopian highlands.
8. *They have unique wildlife*
Ethiopia’s highlands are home to animals found nowhere else: the Ethiopian wolf, gelada baboon with the red chest, and the walia ibex. The Simien Mountains look like something from another planet.
9. *80+ languages, but one alphabet*
Amharic, Oromo, Tigrinya, Somali, and 80+ other languages are spoken. Amharic and Tigrinya use the Ge’ez script, which has 33 consonants with 7 vowel forms each = 231 characters.
10. *They run fast*
Ethiopia has dominated long-distance running for decades. Haile Gebrselassie and Kenenisa Bekele are legends. The high altitude training in Addis Ababa at 2,400m helps.
