They declare public holiday again today make “look-and-start people” sit at home dey think say everything block. They say "Happy Independence!" but look your pocket, look the market, look the price of garri.

Recently in Lagos, children and teenagers gathered with their parents for a programme built around one powerful question:

“Whose Dream Is It Anyway?”

It was not just about career choices. It was about something many families quietly struggle with: the difference between what a child wants to become and what the parent has already decided the child should become.

A 14-year-old participant spoke about his interests in technology, robotics, programming, chess, art and science.

Think about that.

At 14, a child is already beginning to discover different parts of himself. But in many homes, the conversation is already settled.

“Forget football. Go and read medicine.”

“Fashion? What will you use it to eat?”

“You must be a lawyer.”

“Engineering is the only thing that makes sense.”

Parents have every right to guide their children. They know things their children don't know yet. They have seen life. They understand risks. They want a secure future for them.

But guidance should not become the complete replacement of the child's voice.

Sometimes, the child does not need you to immediately agree with the dream. They need you to listen to it.

Ask questions. Find out why they want it. Help them understand the realities. Show them what it will take. Introduce them to people already doing it.

And if the dream needs to change, let that change come through understanding, not fear.

Because when a child learns that home is the place where every dream is mocked, every mistake is punished and every opinion is dismissed, they may eventually stop bringing their dreams home.

First, they stop talking about their interests.

Then their plans.

Then their problems.

And one day, you may realise that your child has become an adult making major decisions without your voice in the picture.

Not because they don't love you.

But because they stopped believing you would listen.

A child is not a project you complete according to your own design.

Guide them. Correct them. Protect them. Prepare them.

But give them room to discover who they are becoming.

The relationship you build with your child today may determine whether they still want your advice tomorrow.
