THE SHORT BILLIONAIRE
Episode 16: Lines Are Drawn
The crowd parted slightly, but not out of respect.
Out of shock.
Chika’s father walked through the sea of cameras and shouting reporters like a man carrying a storm inside his chest. His face was tight, controlled—but his eyes gave everything away.
Anger. Betrayal. And something deeper… disappointment that had been building for a long time.
He stopped right in front of Chika.
For a moment, the noise around them faded.
Only his voice mattered.
“So it’s true,” he said quietly. “You let this become a public disgrace.”
Chika’s lips parted slightly, but no words came out immediately. Not because she had nothing to say—but because everything she wanted to say would make things worse.
Emeka stepped forward slightly, as if to shield her from the pressure.
“Sir, this is being orchestrated. Someone is leaking information to destabilize the company and damage your family.”
Her father’s eyes shifted to Emeka.
“And you,” he said coldly. “You are now part of this?”
Emeka held his ground. “I’m trying to stop it.”
A bitter laugh escaped the older man. “That’s what they all say right before everything collapses.”
The reporters were still shouting questions, but security was struggling harder now. The situation was slipping further out of control.
Then Chika finally spoke.
“Dad… I didn’t know it would get to this point.”
Her voice was low, almost fragile.
Her father turned to her slowly.
“That is the problem, Chika. You never see it coming until it is already burning everything down.”
A heavy silence followed.
Then one reporter pushed forward again.
“Sir! Is it true your brother is involved in the financial scandal?”
That question changed everything.
Chika’s father’s jaw tightened immediately.
“Who told you that?” he snapped.
But no one answered.
Because the damage had already been done.
Emeka noticed something important in that moment. The reaction wasn’t surprise.
It was confirmation.
Chika saw it too.
Her uncle wasn’t just suspected anymore.
He was now officially in the center of it all.
Before anyone could speak again, Emeka’s phone vibrated.
He glanced down.
Another unknown message.
This time, it wasn’t a warning.
It was a location.
And a single sentence beneath it:
“If you want the truth about your uncle, come alone.”
Emeka’s expression hardened.
Chika noticed immediately. “Another message?”
He hesitated for half a second before showing her.
Her eyes scanned it quickly, and her face changed.
“That’s… the old storage facility my father abandoned years ago,” she whispered.
Her father overheard instantly.
His eyes narrowed. “What storage facility?”
Chika looked up at him slowly. “The one linked to old company assets… before the restructuring.”
For the first time, something flickered in her father’s expression.
Uncertainty.
Because that facility wasn’t supposed to be part of any current business conversation.
It was buried history.
Or at least, it was supposed to be.
Emeka made a decision immediately. “Someone wants us there. Now.”
Chika shook her head slightly. “It could be a trap.”
“It is a trap,” Emeka replied. “The question is what’s waiting inside it.”
Her father stepped forward. “No one is going anywhere.”
But Emeka looked at him directly. “Sir, with respect… whoever is behind this already has access to your private records, your media channels, and possibly your staff. Staying here won’t stop them.”
That statement landed heavily.
Chika’s father went silent for a moment.
The reporters were still shouting, still recording, still feeding the chaos.
Then finally he said something unexpected.
“If you go there… I am coming with you.”
Chika turned sharply. “Dad, no—”
But he raised his hand to stop her.
“This stopped being your fight alone the moment my name entered the headlines.”
Emeka exhaled slowly.
He didn’t like it.
But he understood it.
Too many pieces were moving now.
Too many people already involved.
And somewhere in all this…
Daniel had not been mentioned again.
Which made him more dangerous than ever.
As they pushed through the crowd toward the waiting car, Emeka looked back one last time at the flashing cameras.
Somewhere in that noise…
Someone was watching them.
Waiting for them to make the next move.
And already one step ahead.
To be continued…
