SON RETRAINS OYO STATE STAFF ON PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION SCHEME

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Oyo State Office, Ibadan, has retrained staff members on the Product Identification (PI) Scheme as part of efforts to strengthen the implementation of the scheme and ensure that locally produced products for commercial purposes meet required standards and are duly certified. The training was held on 19 August 2026.

The training was introduced by the State Coordinator, Mrs. Ehiabhi Oluwatoyin Iyejide, and facilitated by the SON Product Identification Consultant, Mrs. Tosan Akin-Akosile. The consultant said the retraining was aimed at consolidating staff members’ understanding of the PI Scheme and equipping them with the information required for its effective implementation.

Mrs. Akin-Akosile emphasised the need for more rigorous Product Identification activities, particularly to identify products without applicable standards and ensure they are properly documented for further action. She explained that the PI Scheme is designed to support MSMEs that may not yet meet MANCAP requirements and to register products without standards, creating a database that can support the development and assignment of appropriate standards.

The training covered key areas including Product Identification, industrial categorisation, process flow charts, annual service charges, PI inspection reports, acceptable laboratory test reports, reference samples, laboratory testing charges and the migration of PI products to MANCAP where applicable standards are available. She also reminded staff that PI remains valid for three years where applicable standards are subsequently developed.

The session concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session and recommendations for improving the PI Inspection Report Form. In her vote of thanks, the State Coordinator commended the consultant for the instructive training and urged staff to intensify efforts to eliminate products without SON certification from markets while encouraging producers to embrace the PI Scheme and other applicable SON certification schemes.
