Loving yourself is not the same as being selfish, and a lot of people have conveniently confused the two.
Yes, choose yourself. Set boundaries. Protect your peace. Know your worth. But while you’re doing all of that, ask yourself: What kind of person am I to the people around me?
When people have you in their lives, do they feel loved, supported, encouraged and valued? Do you pour into them the way you expect them to pour into you? Or is everything always about you, your needs, your feelings, your problems, your boundaries?
Self-love should not make you someone who constantly takes without giving. It should make you healthier, more whole, and therefore better able to love others without losing yourself.
You can love yourself deeply and still be a good friend.
You can protect your peace and still have empathy.
You can have boundaries and still be generous.
You can put yourself first sometimes without making yourself the only person that matters.
Because honestly, if everyone around you is constantly drained, hurt, or empty from having you in their lives, maybe it’s time to ask yourself some uncomfortable questions.
Self-love says, “I matter too.”
Selfishness says, “Only I matter.”
Know the difference. ❤️
